Alan Casline has been a poet, editor, and a small press publisher for 40 years. He has published a number of collections of poetry, and has broad interests including watershed wisdom, folklife, natural history, sustainability and local poetry. He is the editor of Normanskill, a watershed anthology from the Normanskill watershed in New York State, and is the editor of Rootdrinker, a long standing magazine of watershed poetics, art and nonfiction. As Director of Rootdrinker Institute, his efforts include running open mics and special gatherings for poets, producing the RD Newsletter and using Benevolent Bird Press to publish the work of fellow writers and artists. He is co-founder and on-going chronicler of The Cloudburst Council, an annual poetics gathering held in the Finger Lakes watershed. He has planted thousands of trees on land he regularly visits in St. Lawrence County, New York. He lives with his wife, Jennifer Pearce, in a suburban neighborhood outside of Albany, New York.

DirectorRootdrinker Institute Sep 1975 - PresentRootdrinker Institute is an outgrowth of Rootdrinker Magazine which I started publishing in 1975 in Canton, New York. Rootdrinker history includes colorful periods of mutation, over praise, the eating of one or two cars, six different printshops, demise & survival—then dormancy and continuation with issue #17 BIG POWWOW published in 2009 and a #18 TRADE GOODS published in 2012. I used to say “since as far as I know Rootdrinker doesn’t owe any one any money” the magazine never quite died. In an attempt to develop a center for artistic expression and community education with what I call a “live action” component Rootdrinker Institute began accepting members in 2008 and currently includes over 45 families and individuals. Members participate in ongoing activities such as small press publications from Benevolent Bird Press, Normanskill Roundtable meetings, a membership newsletter ,“Adventures in Poetry” and small press mini grants, conferences, poetry readings, blogs and website and research efforts in: folklife, natural history, sustainability, local poets and poetry magazines. Members receive one copy of new publications at no cost. This is especially advantageous to the poet and small press as there is a build in distribution to a disserting audience of readers, many of them authors and small press publishers themselves.
