Warrant Officer Engineering Specialist Attract Team
Warrant Officer Engineering Specialist Attract Team
Currently employed as the Engineering Special Attract Team Warrant Officer, my primary role is to manage engineering recruiting activity whilst providing technical and SME advice as required. I also attend organised careers events, where I advise prospective candidates on the opportunities available to them within the engineering branches of the Royal Navy. I have recently taken on the additional role of Direct Entry Technician Manager, which sees me dealing closely with candidates who have engineering and managerial experience, that wish to join the Royal Navy as an engineer on a bespoke “Fast Track” Scheme. In this role I evaluate candidates CVs and conduct initial interviews to establish their suitability prior to recommending them to proceed to the formal interview stage. Additional responsibilities include: Divisional OfficerDepartmental Safety RepEngineering Look at Life Co-ordinator
Deputy Weapon Engineering Officer
I headed up the Weapon Engineering Department consisting of 12 engineers charged with maintaining all of the ship’s weapons, sensors and communications equipment, many of which were old and lacking in spares. All of this whilst consistently operating at reach in one of the most inhospitable regions on earth. I was primarily responsible to the Engineering Officer for ensuring all equipment was working at the optimum performance and available within the Operational Notice. As the Departmental Maintenance Manager, I planned and manged 3 deployed maintenance periods and a significant docking period which included upgrades to the Force Protection Weapons, Navigational RADAR and Satellite Communications systems. Additional responsibilities included: LASER and Radiation Safety OfficerDivisional OfficerOfficer of the DayEngineering Departmental Safety RepUnit Maintenance Management System ManagerCommand AdvisorAmmunition Bans and Constraints ManagerIT Security OfficerExplosives Responsible Officer On joining I took charge of a department which was recovering from a turbulent period, and I inherited some long-standing defects as well as a team lacking identity, drive and moral. Within my first 3 months in post, I established an effective, professional and supportive working environment for the department which led to the restoration of several key capabilities and saw moral rise exponentially. Within 18 months of joining the Engineering Department was awarded the Surface Flotilla Engineering Efficiency Award. Whilst deployed in Antarctica I volunteered to go ashore several times in support of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust helping to maintain sites of historical interest and British Antarctic Survey in support of their vital work in the region.
Surflot Engineering Training Squadron Warrant Officer
My primary responsibility was to assure the professional development of the Engineering Technicians assigned to the Devonport Engineering Training Squadron. This was incredibly difficult and at times frustrating due the restrictions in place caused by the COVID pandemic, such as a very limited amount accommodation being available in the Naval Base and ships were reticent to embark additional personnel unless there was an operational imperative. However, between myself and the 3 Engineering Senior Rates I had on my team we managed to devise lesson plans to be conducted over Microsoft Teams in order to keep the young engineers assigned to us, but stuck at home, engaged. I did succeed in getting 12 young engineers 10 days on a tall ship which gave them the opportunity to do something out of the ordinary during those difficult times. I also managed to secure 6 Marine Engineers the opportunity to assist HMS ECHO during her docking period in Middlesborough, which went a long way to keeping them engaged in the RN whilst being forced to spend so much time at home. The purpose of these was to ensure the project was on schedule, all trials were booked in plenty of time, and all necessary equipment required would be available. They are also key to highlight early any issues which may cause delays to the platforms achieving their Fleet Date. I also took on the additional role of managing the Combat System Certification and the Certificate for Safety of Explosives for the Batch 2 Offshore Patrol Vessels during the period between emerging from build and Vessel Acceptance Date. This task saw me liaising closely Equipment Authorities in order to provide accurate and up to date CCUs, and the Platform Chief engineer to ensure all CSE amendments were applied for and actioned prior to responsibility being handed over to Naval Ship Support at Vessel Acceptance Date.As a Warrant Officer Engineer with a wealth of experience, I was on occasion tasked to support Platform Authority Chief Engineers in their assessing equipment concessions as well as providing advice on safety related issues.Additional responsibilities included: Electronic CCU LeadCSDA Executive Warrant OfficerI was awarded a Herbert Lott award for my role in the digitisation of the CCU, where I developed a process and effective user guide to apply digital signatures to CCUs which enabled business to continue seamlessly during the COVID WFH restrictions.
