As a solution architect in one of the UK’s most successful IT services companies, I worked on many large-scale, high-value projects with diverse customers, partners, business domains and technology stacks.Working on a wide range of projects taught me that while there is no place for a “one size fits all” mentality in software development, chasing technology trends can be equally detrimental to successful delivery. A pragmatic architect has to understand the strengths and weaknesses of different designs, technologies and approaches, balancing innovation and risk with caution as each situation demands.In my opinion this requires a solid, working understanding of technologies and engineering practices so I continued to write code alongside the teams I led and mentored to ensure that I stayed relevant and up to date in my role. In fact, being a technologist at heart, I relished spending time writing code, tackling technical problems and experimenting with emerging technologies.I consistently championed agile engineering and management principles and practices in the belief that simple processes, continual collaboration and relentless automation lead to better solutions, improved quality and happier teams. + Technical lead on a complex project+ Software development using Pro*C, C++, Java & Oracle on AIXWhen I joined Swisslog I was assigned to a newly formed team developing automation software for a major automobile engine assembly plant in the UK and quickly assumed the role of lead developer. The solution was hosted on AIX and developed using a combination of Pro*C, C++ and Java with an Oracle database. I was involved at every stage of the project, from analysis & design through development to on-site testing and commissioning.

+ Software development using C, C++, Fortran, X/Motif, Oracle & Sybase on Solaris & AIX+ Rapid progression from junior developer to technical leadAt PGS I worked on an integrated geoscience and reservoir engineering software system (Tigress) - a suite of 2-tier Unix applications written in C/C++, Fortran and X/Motif with support for both Oracle and Sybase databases. Over the course of 3 years I progressed from junior developer to technical lead, representing the engineering team at user groups and supporting the sales and customer support teams regularly.

+ Software development using C on Silicon Graphics (IRIX) workstationsI joined the defence division of EDS UK as a graduate engineer and developed military avionic simulation software at the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA). The software was written in C and developed and deployed on Silicon Graphics workstations.
