CAREER DRIVEThroughout my professional work I have been driven by the belief that “learning is our core competency” which is evidenced through visible learning | visible progress. Learning engagement is about reinventing the student experience. Schools improve by investing thoughtfully and coherently in the knowledge and  skill of educators.  Everything else is instrumental to this purpose. Schools  that  focus  strongly  on  instructional  goals, promote  a  view  of teaching  as  a  body  of  skill  and  knowledge  that  can  be learned  and  developed over time, rather  than  as  an idiosyncratic and  mysterious  process  that  varies  with  each  teacher. The practice of improvement  involves employing explicit strategies for developing and deploying knowledge and skill in schools:- Attitude: attitudes about learning, teaching & leadership underlie and permeate all behaviours.- Knowledge: deep knowledge of curriculum and pedagogy is the fuel that powers learning & engagement. - Skills: tangible skill levels of mastery and expertise determine our effectiveness.CAREER BACKGROUNDI started my teaching career in 1990 at Mossman SHS in far North Queensland as an English and History teacher. Over my career I have gone on to teach and lead at Bamaga SHS, Mornington Island SS, Capalaba SHS, Thursday Island SHS, Alexandra Hills SHS, Moranbah SHS, Yeronga SHS and Marsden SHS. Prior to my first teaching appointment I graduated from the Queensland University of Technology (then Kelvin Grove BCAE) with a DipT. I am passionate about learning (learning as our core competency) and went on to complete further studies - BArts (English Lit), GradDip Journalism and a Masters in Applied Communications. I am passionate about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education and rural/remote education having worked in three remote indigenous communities across Queensland - Bamaga, Mornington Island and Thursday Island. I am currently a Torres Strait Island Ambassador - helping to promote and recruit teachers to the schools in the Torres Strait. I have worked all over Queensland in various roles from classroom teacher, Head of Department (English), Deputy Principal and Principal. Before moving into my current role as Deputy Regional Director (Metro Region), I was Assistant Regional Director (Gold Coast/Logan and then Metro) and Executive Principal of Marsden SHS in Logan City for 8 years.
