In the 10 years I have worked in the education sector, both public and private, I have found there are three primary tiers. The third tier, which mistakenly most believe to be the first, education, sits firmly behind: 1) safeguarding2) health and safety Before you even get to education, you must be able to prove the aforementioned is firmly embedded within the school’s culture. As the head of estate for North Bridge House, part of the Cognita family for seven years, I have led on many capital expenditure projects, environmental initiatives, R&M spend and manage all hard and soft services as well being the estates H&S co ordinator. I manage and maintain a diverse portfolio of properties, some of which are leased, listed and freehold. This gives me experience of liaising with landlords, heritage and conservation bodies and ensuring obligations and responsibilities are met as prescribed.I work along side project managers, structural engineers, architects, town planners, localauthority representatives and specialists on a regular basis ensuring projects are delivered compliantly, on time, to company policy and to budget. In my role as H&S Co ordinator I regularly meet with heads and executive heads and their SLT to discuss, minute and create action points for close out for all aspects of relevant H&S obligations and responsibilities. One thing worth remembering about H&S is reverse burden of proof. When asked of the importance of H&S I often describe it is a collective responsibility led by the employer with the single most important requirement, create a H&S culture.I sit at SLT level, am a member of the IWFM and undergo regular H&S training pertinent to my role, including Managing H&S in the workplace (IOSH).I have contributed to over 15 ISI, OFSTED and SIS inspections, mainly relevant sections of ‘parts three to five’ of ISSR standards and am often complemented on my knowledge, tenacity and professionalism by inspectors.When asked about my input and experience of said inspections, I always respond ‘“ensure policy meets practice, be able to demonstrate that and you’ll be okay.”I enjoy working in the education sector and the daily challenges it throws up as well as the scheduling and pre planning it allows me to achieve through knowledge of compliance, regulation, insurance requirements and company policy.
