About Alan Lane

I have been a professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering at The University of Alabama since 1986 and retired as a Professor Emeritus in June, 2016.In the fall of 2019, I published Separation Process Essentials with CRC Press. It is intended for introductory courses in separation processes and unit operations. I have a free and open web site to support the book at separationsbook.com. I have taught almost every course in the department's curriculum, most commonly material and energy balances, separations, unit operations laboratory, and undergraduate/graduate reactor design. My research areas over the years have evolved from heterogeneous catalysis, metal casting, magnetic inks and tape, hydrogen production, and fuel cell electrochemistry. I have served my department as graduate program director, acting department head, and honors program director. I started one of the nation's first courses in process safety back in 1987 and was active in the AIChE's process safety engineering group for many years. I have been a consulting and expert witness for both plaintiffs and defendants in chemical accident lawsuits. I continue to accept new cases. Before joining UA, I was a laboratory technician in an ASTM testing lab, process engineer for Battelle Pacific Northwest Lab (spent nuclear fuel reprocessing), and a research engineer for Union Carbide (fluidized polymerization processes). I have a BS Chemistry, BS Chemical Engineering, both from U Washington, and a PhD Chemical Engineering from U Massachusetts.

Not a lot has changed after retirement, just who signs my paycheck (thanks Retirement System of Alabama and Social Security!). I still come to my office most days (maybe a little later than before) and work on my new textbook Separation Process Essentials (CRC Press, 2020) and accompanying web site SeparationsBook.com, and teach/mentor when needed. I spend more time thinking great thoughts at the campus Starbucks. I'd like to do some mini-sabbaticals and expert consulting on chemical process safety.
  • The University Of Alabama Dept Of Chemical And Biological Engineering
    Professor
The University Of Alabama Dept Of Chemical And Biological Engineering Aug 1986 - Jun 2016
    Tuscaloosa, Alabama Area
Taught chemical engineering courses for 30 years. Conducted research and mentored graduate students in areas described in my summary. Currently I am focused on teaching the introductory Materials and Energy Balance course that lays the foundation for the rest of the curriculum. I am also extending my research in electrochemistry to Li-air batteries.
  • Union Carbide
    Research Engineer
    Union Carbide 1984 - 1986
I developed new polymerization processes (from laboratory to commercial scale) using their Unipol fluidized bed technology.
  • University Of Massachusetts Amherst
    Graduate Research Assistant
University Of Massachusetts Amherst Aug 1979 - Dec 1983
    Amherst, Massachusetts
Dissertation research in heterogeneous catalysis, specifically characterization of catalyst pore structure using mercury porosimetry and modeling. I was Professor Curt Conner's first graduate student so I was responsible for helping build his laboratory's infrastructure, from setting up the GC/MS to building glass vacuum systems. I also had projects on selective synthesis gas reactions and polymerization. My co-mentor was Professor Vladimir Haensel. I also was teaching assistant for various chemical engineering courses.
  • Battelle
    Process Engineer
    Battelle 1977 - 1979
Helped build, startup, and operate the first pilot-scale reprocessing plant for commercial nuclear waste to remove U and Pu so the fission products could be vitrified. Supervised a shift of technicians during operations. Successfully met President Carter's directive to demonstrate this technology before the end of the 70s.
  • Northwest Testing Laboratories
Everything From Janitor To Analytical Chemist
    Northwest Testing Laboratories 1967 - 1977
    Portland, Oregon Area
I worked there during the summers and weekends. As a freshman in high school, I was a janitor. Very soon I was performing ASTM quality tests on concrete, metals, soils, welds, etc. During my college years I was studying chemistry and worked in the chemistry lab. Occasionally I was sent into the field to collect samples, particularly during concrete pours. This job gave me a fantastic foundation in experimental materials and chemical testing and also paid for my college education.
