About Alan Mann

Having spent over 40 years providing services, I have seen the oil & gas exploration industry go through remarkable changes & it’s clear that it's going through one of the most transformative periods in its history, redefining the energy business as we know it.Managing this level of change requires smart & strategic judgment on the part of O&G companies. They must address cost & investment concerns in the short term while ensuring their costs are held in check. There is an imbalance created with the “shale” acquisitions, as the acreage is at premiums not seen before, elevating cost. Operators look at all ways to reduce their drilling costs, bringing the directional day-rates down to levels last seen in the 1990’s. While these rates keep coming down, at some point it becomes counter-productive.For the latter part of my career, I have been providing directional drilling services to the industry. Horizontal drilling has proven to be faster, more cost effective & less disruptive to surface activity. After graduating high school, I got my first drilling job & at the age of 21 in the DJ Basin. I eventually took a job in the Middle East where I spent 10 years as a Senior Drilling Foreman, chasing rigs in six countries, which enabled me to see some of the latest & greatest oilfield tools & technologies, available anywhere in the world. When I returned to the states in 1990, I got involved in the directional drilling market, more specifically the “Horizontal Boom” in the Texas area.Subsequently, I’ve overseen the operations of three start-up directional drilling companies, including “Stryker Directional”, which began in 2010.My business philosophy is simple & straightforward, there is always room for good work, & good work always prevails! If you have any questions or would like to discuss my experiences, please email me at Alan.Mann@StrykerDirectional.com Please let me know what’s on your mind.

Driller On Rotary Rig

Empire Drilling

Decided to memorialize my career, so I’m using my rotary career as a start. I actually started on a work over rig, near ft.lupton Colorado. It was March 1974, I was leaving the local beef plant, working as a stacker in the offal department, (freezer, stacking meat boxes on assembly line) my friends were all oilfield. What I liked about the beef plant, was work started about 5:30, and ended about 3pm, usually 5 days a week. It didn’t pay great, but I was off about 3, and most weekends! My oilfield buddies made better money, but worked shifts, and many worked 7 days a week! They would prod me to come over to patch, and one day I finally succumbed and quit the beef plant, and took a job on a work over rig. Not quite rotary wages 6.00 vs.3.25. The difference was the w/o rig got paid door to door, and the drilling rig got 8hrs, and traveled on their own time. We started getting overtime by Wed/Thursday, (after40), and rotaryhands typically had 40 after 5 days. That somewhat leveled the pay situation. W/o hands left home at 5:30, and got home at dark, summer time it was 8:00pm, winter time it was 6-6:30. So it wasn’t unusual to get 14hours a day, we would get at least 60-70 hours a week, meaning sometimes as much as 80 regular and 60 ot a half (two weeks). Meaning parish in paychecks with rotary hands, cause even the 7 day hands only typically get 16 hours ot, wk. or 32 hours ot a half. About the spring of 76, brother got out of Navy, and came home. We moved in together in ft Morgan, eventually moving to Greeley. I wasn’t working for a short period, and we both needed work, when one morning our phone rang, and it was a high school mate of my brother. He was drilling on a rotary rig (N4-Brewster) and needed a crew. Andy had never roughnecked, but told Tom that I could work derricks, and he was interested in worms corner. We hired out, and got directions to rig in Weld county Colorado. We drove out, and they were rigging up. As it turns out, the best move I ever made. TBC
