Alan McFetridge (b. 1971), an Aotearoa/New Zealand-born, UK-based artist, draws on his farming ancestry and urban life to create photographic works exploring Landscape Fire. During his formative years in the Rotorua region of Aotearoa, he was surrounded by stories from the Te Arawa people and his Celtic descent.In 1990, his passion for photography and music took him to London, where he landed a job as a full-time assistant to photographer Tim Flach. He pursued a career in commercial photography until a personal crisis in 2012 forced him to reconsider how he could better utilise photography and address global dispossession issues.In the following years, McFetridge's work found a focus thanks to a significant Environmental Bursary granted by the Royal Photographic Society. The severity of the Global Fire Crisis became apparent when he captured the aftermath of a devastating wildfire in Canada in 2016. His book, "On The Line" (2019), nominated for the distinguished Prix Pictet prize five times, delves into the trauma of mass evacuation and the sudden upheaval accompanying it. Since then, the author has conducted field studies in Australia, the UK, and Greece. These projects involve collaborations with partners in Dance, Data Science, Art History, Fire Science, and Indigenous Fire Knowledge to create a study that explores the context of open flames and their role in the Earth System and human cultural heritage as a unique transformational force.McFetridge's photographic series Songs of the Dead was published in Sophia Journal's Volume 7, Issue 1, titled 'Landscapes of Care: the emergence of landscapes of care in extreme territories', bringing his artistic interpretations of landscape fire into an academic, peer-reviewed platform.-"We must relearn how to live with fire" A.M.
