On the eve of my father’s retirement, he said that what he would miss most was being treated as an expert about something. I am not there yet but still have time. Along the way, I have often experienced how great it feels to lead a project from site search to opening. My team and I specify and monitor the entire process that transforms a plot of land or existing structure into a state-of-the-art distribution facility with plenty of space for future needs. Every new distribution facility or raw office floor space is a spectacularly clean slate of potential. They represent a fresh start where employees get excited about a new working environment that I had a role in creating. It is what I do well, and I get better each time we do it. Not just as a consultant but as part of an expert team.For the past 20 years, I have been a founding partner of Choyce Peterson, Inc. The company is named after the two men I most admire, my father, Rudy Peterson and my father-in-law Richard Choyce. John Hannigan jumped from R-D to become my equal partner. Today I specialize in bringing my site selection and negotiation skills, plus my love of building “stuff” to clients and mentoring new minds on the ins and outs of real estate. And if that isn’t enough of a blessing, I married way out of my league the first time around and have kept my wife, three children, and six grandchildren convinced that I am still worth having around.
