The recession of 2008 and my purchase of a rather expensive new home were the inspirations for me to change my approach to marketing. For many years I had kept myself out of any spotlight and focused getting sites ranked on the search engines without taking direct credit for my work. Often other companies would resell me and they would pretend to be the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) experts. However, the recession meant companies were looking at cheaper alternatives to marketing and outsourcing to India or the Philippines was becoming increasing popular. SEO was becoming a commodity and businesses were choosing their experts not by skill but by price. I embraced what I knew. I'm a SEO expert, so I decided to get my brand ranked on Google. I chose to brand the term "SEO Guru", which since 2008 I'm usually in the top 10 if not #1. This was a simple task for me, since it was something I had done for clients many times.
