About Alan Ryder

RESEARCH AREAS:My research can be divided into two core areas, Analytical Sciences and Photonics. In the analytical sciences we develop new analytical methods for a wide variety of problems from biopharmaceutical manufacturing to oil exploration. Our main focus currently is the development and implementation of novel, platform analytical technologies for biopharmaceutical manufacturing. This encompasses all aspects of the bioprocess from the raw materials right through to the final product. Large-scale collaborations undertaken with a multitude of biopharmaceutical manufacturers including Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Janssen-Biologics.In photonics research we focus on more fundamental studies of molecules and materials, and also on instrumentation building/modification. In the long-term the photonics research feeds into the analytical research in terms of instrumentation and new measurement methodologies. All of the research is a combination of chemistry, physics and mathematics.PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES• Reviewer for multiple academic journals in analytical science, biotechnology, petroleum and photonics domains. • Expert reviewer for several funding agencies.Specialties: Process Analytical Technologies.Spectroscopy & Chemometrics.Bioanalytical methods.Fluorescence Microscopy.

Listed skills include Spectroscopy, Chemometrics, Analytical Chemistry, Fluorescence Microscopy, and 16 others.

School Of Chemistry, Nuig.

Teaching:Lectures on spectroscopy to 2-4 year undergraduate students. Laboratory class supervision at 1-3 year undergraduate students.Supervision of 4Y & MSc projects.Supervision of PhD students.Research Interests: My main interests involve the use of photonics technologies and chemometric analysis for the quantitative analysis of complex systems. In the Process Analytical Technologies (PAT) area we develop novel rapid, quantitative analytical methods based on spectroscopy and chemometrics. The primary focus is on the development of novel, quantitative analytical methods for the Biopharmaceutical industry. This research involves large-scale collaborations with various biopharmaceutical manufacturing companies, and partnerships with instrument manufacturers such as Agilent and Kaiser Optical Systems Inc. Specialties include the analysis of raw materials, cell culture media, proteins in solution, and bioprocess broths. In the Advanced Microscopy and Fluorescence spectroscopy area we apply advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques to measuring dynamic biological and chemical processes at surfaces (biomaterials), and in living cells. The involves the use of Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM), Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS), Fluorescence Cross-Correlation Spectroscopy (FCCS), and Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy (TIRFM). Other research includes: development of fluorescence based methods for measuring surface and bulk polarity of polymers, developing plasmonic based highly sensitive assays, for applications in the clinical and life sciences, and development of qualitative and quantitative analytical methods for crude oils and petroleum bearing fluid inclusions.
