About Alan Sill
Alan Sill is the Managing Director of the High Performance Computing Center and Adjunct Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Texas Tech University, and co-directs the US National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Cloud and Autonomic Computing (CAC). Dr. Sill holds a PhD in particle physics from American University and has an extensive track record of work in scientific computing, having contributed substantially to both the detector hardware and to the software used in the discovery of the top quark at Fermilab and to the computing used to discover the Higgs boson at CERN. He has published in topics spanning computing, particle and nuclear physics, cosmic ray physics and radioisotope analysis. He serves as President of the Open Grid Forum, an international computing standards organization, and is an active member of IEEE, the Distributed Management Task Force, and several other computing standards working groups. He serves either directly or as liaison for the Open Grid Forum on several national and international standards roadmap committees. He is active in pursuit of advanced methods for data center control and in integrating renewable energy sources with the needs for large scale computing. Led research program at TTU in computing and silicon hardware development for Collider Detector of Fermilab (CDF). Developed numerous computing algorithms for analysis of high energy physics experimental data and for creation of world-wide computing grids. Led distributed database development team and experimental detector calibration efforts, and developed novel computing methods for correction of experimental data for physical effects of non-uniformity of detector magnetic fields, precise determination of beam locations, and other detailed effects important in the analysis of experimental data.
