Pretty much retired as of his last published Travel piece (Oahu, in February 2018 for the Chicago Tribune) -- unless teased back by an offer he can't refuse. But before that: After 40 years (including 31 with the Chicago Tribune) as a reporter and editor in the newspaper business -- most of them fun -- Solomon accepted an amicable buyout offer from the Trib in March 2008. That began the next stage of what's been a wonderful life -- which turned out to be splitting time between freelance writing -- much of it Travel-related, for multiple newspapers, Tribune included, and some magazines -- and teaching: He taught journalism as an adjunct professor at Northwestern University's Medill School (Long Form, Travel Writing, Methods: 2008-2014) and Columbia College Chicago (Grammar for Journalists: 2008-2012); he also taught Introduction to Journalism at DePaul University (2011), and continues to drop by as a guest speaker/lecturer at Chicago-area colleges. His second book, "A Century of Wrigley Field: The Official History of the Friendly Confines," published by Major League Baseball and the Chicago Cubs, was released in December 2013; his first, "Eat. Play. Love. Our Neighborhoods," was published in August 2010 by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. More recently, he was a contributor to "The Chicago Food Encyclopedia," published in 2017 by University of Illinois Press.Solomon remains open, sort of, to writing assignments that make sense to him.Specialties: As a writer: His primary interests are travel (everywhere, every way) and sports (especially but not exclusively baseball). His travel photography also has won national recognition.As an editor: Reflecting his newspaper reporting and editing background, strengths include sports, travel, politics and the performing arts. He has edited several books, including histories of the Chicago White Sox and Cubs, and a biography of Hall of Fame shortstop Honus Wagner.
