Fonthill Media LLc publishes under the imprint America Through Time. The Company publishes books of local and regional history to America. America Through Time books are distributed throughout the United States of America by Arcadia Publishing Inc., Mount Pleasant, SC.

Alan is the founder, Chief Executive and main shareholder of Fonthill Media limited. As well as managing the Company he takes the prime role in directing the publishing policy of the list. At present this includes military and aviation history, but there is also a move towards ancient history and archaeology for which Alan was also well know at Tempus Publishing between 1998 and 2007.

Sutton Verlag was founded in 1996 to publish local interest books in Germany and Austria. By 2007 it had more than 16 employees and published nearly 200 titles per year.

Arcadia was founded in 1993 with offices at Dover NH, but shortly afterwards moved to Portsmouth NH. In 1995 a Midwest regional office was opened in Chicago and in 1996 a Southern regional office was opened in Charleston. In 1998 Charleston was made the head office.Alan Sutton sold the business in 2002, but now retains friendly links as Arcadia acts as US distributor for Alan's America Through Time imprint.

Alan's first book was published on his 25th birthday, 22 August 1974. After publishing under his own name for four year the Company was formally incorporated in June 1978 with David Verey as the first Chairman. Having outgrown its Gloucester office, the Company moved to Far Thrupp in Stroud in 1990. The Company was acquired by the Guernsey Press Company Limited in 1987 and Alan remained as Managing Director, and also as Chairman by this time until 1993.
