I really enjoy being a part of the creation of useful devices. I like everything about it, from the cutting edge development to the history (isn't it amazing how many things we think were just invented but came out 100+ years ago!). I've never felt locked down by one discipline, moving from mechanical development to electrical/software and back again. I was fortunate enough to be exposed early in my career to high level engineering and project management from the UK and Europe, which reinforced my own feelings of doing things 'properly' just for the sake of it, and taught me to always try to look at problems from first principles. Internal combustion engines are one of my favorite machines. It seems like there is a bit of every engineering discipline (except nuclear and particle physics for now). Being an army brat in a family that truly appreciated the different cultures of the world gave me an exposure to different ways of looking at problems.

Although a lot of work was required to adopt the engine to conditions found in high speed marine craft, the fundamental engine from Chrysler/Dodge is very well laid out and aesthetically pleasing. The result for Ilmor was dominance in long distance offshore races such as Cowes Torquay. As of last year, Ilmor not only won the race but finished 1-2-3. All racing results were with product identical to that fitted to customer pleasure boats.
