About Alan Wang

Hi! I am a computer science BSMS student at UIUC where I'm a part of a lot of activities. My main academic activities in the recent years has spanned two distinct but similar areas: hardware security and drug discovery. My deep interest in hardware and systems security stems from the discovery of more vulnerabilities in modern complex system. These complex systems bring even more devastating consequences when combined together. This ever expanding infinite war on complexity has shown that security is a becoming more and more of a pressing issue that has largely remained out of sight. In my work, I focus on discovering the nasty consequences by designing novel techniques to leak secrets from complex system. The new techniques are meant to guide future defensive thinking. In this regard, parts of my work also entail defense work to help protect applications without sacrificing too much performance against similar style of attacks. I'm also a big proponent of drug discovery and its importance for the future. The recent pandemic and the damage it has caused is a big wake-up call for improving and speeding up the drug discovery process. A lot of my background before security was in this domain where I worked on using robotics and complex computer systems to speed up the drug discovery process. I hope and believe that my work will make a significant impact in the future by investing my efforts in what I believe are important issues for the present and even more important for the future.
