Blum Capital Partners, Lp
San Francisco Bay Area
Blum Capital Partners utilizes private equity and strategic block transactions to invest in both public and private companies. The firm views themselves as owning a piece of a business, rather than just its stock. They do not engage in hostile transactions. Their goal is to help management build companies to their full potential for the benefit of shareholders, management and employees. Blum Capital Partners has been known to engage in shareholder activism investment strategies. Blum's investment strategy is based on rigorous research. The firm monitors hundreds of companies in the publicly-held small- and mid-cap markets and typically conducts on-site visits with many of the management teams. They continuously develop and revise a select list of companies that are fundamentally good businesses which they believe are undervalued. Blum only makes new investments in a small number of the companies they monitor each year. They expect to build a substantial position in each business, either through the acquisition of strategic blocks of common shares in the public market or in a privately negotiated transaction. They generally strive to be the largest shareholder and on a friendly basis, and will seek board representation if they feel that it will enhance their ability to create value. Blum expects to work with management to develop and implement financial or other business strategies to strengthen the company and enhance its value. Though not limited by sector, Blum tends to invest in the stocks of US small-cap companies in the finance, consumer services and electronic technology sectors. The firm maintains a very low turnover rate. Their sell decisions are based on a long-term perspective, rather than quarterly performance or short-term price fluctuations. Blum sets specific strategic and valuation goals when entering an investment and seeks to divest their position once those targets are achieved. This typically occurs over a 1- to 5-year period.
