Co-founded the company with Leo Brody. Recognized the emerging jean market for young people that opened up their own stores in college towns and low-rent areas all over the country. Tommy Hilfiger from Elmira, NY was one of our original customers, as was Merry-Go-Round, Up Against the Wall, The Different Drummer, etc. We referred to these as underground stores that sold jeans, rock-n-roll posters, rolling paper, among other things. These stores were created for this emerging jean-wearing market by them for them. We jokingly referred to these underground stores as "purple cockroach" stores. They had a funky nature to them, they were down-to-earth, and they represented what the under-30 generation was feeling at the time.
