Responsible for software engineering components and operations of data pipelines, streaming and batch analytics, and alerting based on the data ingested across the full Cloudflare fleet including laptops, SaaS tools, datacenters, and the full world-wide Cloudflare edge fleet. I balanced the needs of running a production system while building something new.Production System:- I owned software engineering feature development, maintenance, and on-call/operations of our existing in-house SIEM (golang/rust/python, Kubernetes/K8S, GCP/AWS, serverless). - Worked with stake holders to surface and prioritize features, operational gaps, and cost reductions as data sizes grew. Prioritized MVP of net-new services adding value quickly.- Honed the SDLC process following agile processes to move towards repeatable feature delivery with high confidence. Incorporated stand-ups, sprints, dev and staging environments, and unit/integration testing gates with the aim of higher resiliency software systems.- Revamped internal alerting/monitoring around actionable alerts, runbooks, and error free logging. Ran on-call for 24-7 uptime. - Managed ICs building the in-house SIEM (primarily golang in GCP and in-house datacenter K8S) encompassed log ingestion/ETL, streaming analytics, batch analytics, alert management, enrichment, SOAR, case management, incident response tooling, internal monitoring/telemetry/alerting and the CI/CD pipeline to build and deploy the product and analytics rules. Greenfield Development:- I drove development of a next generation security data analytics systems (e.g. SIEM) running on Cloudflare's edge network.- Ran requirements gathering, technology discovery, and POCs for a new security analytics system using a distributed Data Lake, ETL, and query processing; Vector, Delta Lake, Datafusion- Executed on an iterative plan to transition to the new while maintaining operational capabilities in the legacy system.

Multiple product leadership roles including legacy products, new development and off-shore engineering. Led a multifunctional engineering team for Splunk's premiere behavioral analytics platform as well as a next generation, greenfield, cloud first analytics product. Led other managers, individual contributors, and off-shore teams. Responsible for two product lines, Splunk UBA (aka Caspida) on-prem product line and a ground up multi-tenant SaaS development of Splunk UEBA Cloud product line. - Manage local front-end/back-end teams as well as two off-shore teams (38 total headcount in org).- Balancing resources between revenue generating existing product and development of a new cloud-first, multi-tenant product. - Hire, fire, define milestones, set vision, remove roadblocks, refine processes, and led team towards delivering on-time with high quality. - Partnerships with PMO, PM, Pubs, and other teams within a 6000 person organization to move products forward.

Built a multi-functional team to deliver Reservoir’s first commercial cyber security network sensor (Bro/Zeek core engine) product within a company that had focused on R&D services for the past 20 years. - Defined roadmap, built development environment, QA, and other processes, developed platform vendor relationships, outsourced manufacturing including order fulfillment and software provisioning, engaged channel partners, and delivered a scalable 20Gb network security monitoring appliance for behavioral analytics to Fortune 10 customers. - Hands on development of the first prototype systems shipped to customers creating the roadmap to commercialize and stabilize Bro/Zeek. - Managed and led the team (across 9 timezones) from initial conceptions through multiple rounds of hiring into various roles. - Expanded product offering from on-prem appliance, to Virtual Machines, Containers, and Cloud.- Handled product development from conception through EOL planning/announcements, touched on all aspects of commercial product development; engineering, business development, finance, product management, etc.Issued multiple patents, wrote journal/conference papers, spoke at conferences, wrote and won DOD/DOE government funding proposals, Principal Investigator for R&D projects.

QED Labs was a small biotech company started by my wife, Dr. Pam Thuman-Commike. During a 15 month leave from SGI, I served as Director of Engineering to build the foundations for the Computational Biology products developed over the following years. Built up systems infrastructure for software development practices including automated build and test, source control and defect tracking. Designed a distributed Computational Biology platform that enabled scalability to hundreds of processors. Led the development team from initial product conception through prototype and into development phases. Helped set the tone and culture of the startup company as a place where people enjoyed working.I continued to monitor and advise QED Labs over many years of growth.

I held various roles at SGI including core OpenGL engineering, technical marketing, application performance tuning concentrating on High Performance Visualization and High Performance Compute, and finally culminating as a Principal Engineer concentrating on High Performance Visualization. Extensive knowledge of 3D graphics performance tuning, GPGPU coding, HPC, and extreme disk I/O.
