With St. James's acting as one of the largest surgical, trauma and haematological centres in the country, the blood transfusion laboratory is a busy and dynamic team environment, tasked with ensuring a rapid supply of compatible blood components, for multiple patients each day.Frequently, our team was faced with life threatening bleeds, multiple grouping anomalies and complex transfusion cases. Throughout my time at St. James's, I greatly developed as a scientist and gained the following competencies:1. The use of the Telepath laboratory information system.2. Performance of automated and manual group and screens.3. Operation and maintenance of the BIO-RAD IH-1000 autogroupers.4. Crossmatching using electronic, immediate spin and Coombs techniques.5. The performance of antibody identifications and antigen phenotyping.6. Advanced serological investigations including elutions, adsorptions, and antibody titres.7. Competent is the use of the blood track system.8. The performance of transfusion reaction investigations.9: Issuing blood components to individuals with life threatening haemorrhage.10: The performance of internal and external quality control.

A 25 week hospital laboratory placement was undertaken in the 3rd year of the degree, rotating through each of the 5 major laboratory diagnostic disciplines (haematology, biochemistry, blood transfusion, microbiology and histopathology/cytology).
