About Alan H. Duong
Aerospace and Mechanical Engineer with a strong experimental background and solid experience in numerical modeling and tool development.I earned my doctoral degree in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame in which my thesis work contributed to the understanding of a decades-old problem of turbulent boundary layer viscous drag reduction . Before that, I was a first generation college student at Kansas State University where I was a McNair Scholar and a recipient of the Dept. of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Outstanding Senior Award. In Oct. 2019, I started my post-graduate career as an Aerospace Engineer at Cornerstone Research Group, Inc. In my capacity at CRG, I have been involved in a multitude of programs which include aircraft design and development, numerical modeling, experimental testing, and design tool development. I have executed technical and programmatic work on numerous DoD SBIR/STTR contracts across different disciplines and have been an active participant in proposal writing and securing new contracts.I am now an Aerodynamic Design Engineer for Accessible Technologies, Inc. specializing in compressor design for high efficiency blowers.
Listed skills include Certified Solidworks Associate, Research, Eclipse Java, Mathematica, and 14 others.

Team Leader And Aerospace Engineer
As an Aerospace Engineer at Cornerstone Research Group, I take on several roles which range from technical engineering to program management to customer engagement. I leverage a combination of experimental and computational skills to meet technical and program objectives. I actively work in the following technology areas: - Aerodynamics and fluid dynamics (subsonic to high-speed)- Flow control technologies- Quiet electric propulsion- Computational fluid dynamics- Design tool development- Thermal science and heat transfer- Data and signal processingIn addition to the listed technical areas/responsibilities, a major aspect of my job is idea inception, proposal writing, and execution of defense awarded contracts. To-date, I have secured and led over $20MM in R&D programs.
Graduate Research Assistant | Ph.D. Candidate
PhD Thesis Title: Active Turbulent Boundary Layer Control: An Experimental Evaluation Of Viscous Drag Reduction Using Pulsed-DC Plasma ActuatorsDesigned and conducted experiments for zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer drag reduction. Achieved viscous drag reduction at high freestream Mach numbers (comparable to flight conditions) and characterized underlying flow physics. Designed, prototyped and fabricated several electronic devices such has low-pass filters, hot-wire anemometers, etc. used extensively in experimental fluid dynamics research. Experienced in signal processing and data analysis.Trained and mentored undergraduate and graduate students in experimental techniques and analog circuit design. Consulted on numerous experimental studies which utilized plasma flow control.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
AME 30331 - Fluid Mechanics (Fall semesters) Primarily a grader for the undergraduate fluid mechanics course. Held office hours for students to come receive additional help/assistance on homework or understanding underlying principles of fluid mechanics. AME 21241 - Solid Mechanics Laboratory (Spring semesters) Lab instructor for the undergraduate solid mechanics laboratory. In charge of demonstrating the lab and supervising students. Grading of lab reports were a secondary responsibility. AME 20217 - Lab 2 (Spring semesters) Lab instructor for the undergraduate teaching laboratory. In charge of demonstrating the lab and supervising students. Grading of lab reports were a secondary responsibility. This course assignment was unique in that it was the first semester that this course was offered. Additional responsibilities that came with this include trouble-shooting of new lab equipment and lab exercises. AME 60636 - Experimental Methods in Fluid Mechanics (Fall semesters) Teaching assistant for graduate level course that introduces new first year graduate students to commonly used experimental techniques in fluid mechanics research. Primary responsibilities include setting up experimental facilities, grading assignments, providing feedback and supervising of lab work.
