After a particularly challenging design project one my colleagues asked if I thought of myself as a rockstar designer. I laughed and said no, I'm more like a house-band designer. Which meant that I was reliable, flexible, easy to work with, and knew a lot of different things. He though it was an apt metaphor.We continued the discussion around design and some of our background and experiences, which ended up being similar. My work in graphic/web design covers more than 20 years, with clients ranging from sole proprietors to fortune 500 companies. The projects I've worked on span a similarly wide range and include: logo design, newsletters, photo retouching, website design, programming, marketing materials, project management, magazine ads, business card, book layouts, invitations, promotional materials, etc.We also talked about the other skills we brought to the table, or the stage, in this case. He got very curious when I mentioned being trained to facilitate ropes courses. I explained that it was, in a sense, the logical extension of my coaching certification and leadership training. Being able to listen to people, being patient with them in what ever state they are in, and bringing a calm sense of safety are invaluable in working with clients. He agreed.
