As an architect I believe good design is simple design, abstraction makes complex system easier to understand, and quality matters. I build complex software systems that work. As a manager I love seeing people grow and learn. I believe in developing the team you have, encouraging and motivating, introducing process when it helps. I engender a trust-based relationship where all team members are valued and respected, while recognizing team members have different skills and ambitions. I deliver quality work, and encourage those around me to do likewise I joined eBay in 2011 from Australia to deliver the Cassini search engine rewrite project for the 2012 holiday season for “completed” items, 2013 for “active” items. Project challenges included scale (thousands of machines), performance, reliability (search must never go down), Hadoop for index construction, C++ for query evaluation. I was also responsible for the old search engine including business lift targets. Cassini rolled out with no down time or customer impact. I then worked on aligning business and technical strategy for Magento and eBay Enterprise, becoming VP of architecture when Magento was spun out. Magento is #1 in the IR 1000 and IR B2B 300. Launched the Magento cloud offering in months, review potential acquisitions, technical alignment multiple product lines, set the technical direction for the Magento core platform, actively engaged with the Magento ecosystem, worked with Google on PWA and AMP for Magento. In Australia I helped successfully commercialize research from RMIT University, a high performance NoSQL database system for large scale search (e.g. large Defense/Intelligence databases) and complex document management (e.g. Legislation). Exceeded 1 billion record databases in 2003 on a handful of machines.
