Alan’s more than 25 years of design experience informs every project in the practice, from the functional details of building systems to the sense of social interaction in the spaces that help create moments of informal learning.Before he opened Metcalfe Architecture & Design in 2001, Alan spent over ten years as a lead designer or partner at three other firms in Philadelphia. Alan earned a Master of Architecture from Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from Tufts University. In addition to his architecture experience, Alan has worked as a contractor and cabinetmaker. Outside the practice, Alan is a guest lecturer and visiting critic at local architecture schools, serves on the boards of multiple non-profit community and cultural organizations, and is an amateur musician.
