I am a professional adult who has been teaching students with disabilities to be successful and functional adults for over twenty years. I teach life skills (activities of daily living, job skills, social skills, and study skills) to people with cognitive, developmental, emotional, and physical disabilities. These are the skills that define our success at interacting with the world, but are rarely taught in any meaningful - or direct - way. Our clients are those people who didn't learn these skills by observation or osmosis, or who need to learn specific ways to accomplish seemingly everyday activities. Our job is to teach them not just the skill, but why the skill matters and how to apply it in their day-to-day lives. We teach the skills and strategies that will help people with gaps in their knowledge and/or disabilities how to interact and communicate with the world - and hopefully, the experiences, events, and people in it.
