About Alanne Rayssa Melo

I’m a PhD researcher in the field of Molecular Biology, who has a great passion for science. I worked in different areas of knowledge of Biological Sciences, with emphasis on the area of virology (HPV), vaccine development subfield (Science and Technology/Innovation). During my Ph.D., I researched a therapeutic DNA vaccine against cervical cancer in a pre-clinical model. In addition, throughout my scientific training, I carried out research in the fields of population genetics (genetic polymorphisms), plant breeding (in vitro micropropagation) and epigenetics (DNA methylation analysis). During my doctorate, I participated in two sandwich Doctorate internships abroad at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori Regina Elena, in Rome – Italy. During my undergraduate, master's and doctoral studies, I accumulated around 500 hours of teaching internships for elementary, secondary and higher education students, holding theoretical and practical classes in the laboratory. Through years of research, I have collaborated in the writing of scientific papers and books; I have participated in National and International Congresses (Brazil and Italy) with presentation of works in oral and poster modalities; In addition to having been part of the review boards in more than 10 undergraduate theses. As interpersonal skills I can highlight: self-management ability; great ability to work in a team with easy interaction with people; adaptation to new work environments and new research areas; ability to express myself in 3 languages (portuguese, english and italian); curiosity and passion for biomedical research; resilience and persistence when facing difficulties and willingness to learn. My mission is to contribute to the research of difficult-to-manage diseases, such as cancer, thus improving the quality of life of patients.

    Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil
PhD in Genetics in the field of virology (human papillomavirus), vaccine development sub-area (Science and Technology/Innovation), where I researched a therapeutic DNA vaccine against cervical cancer in a pre-clinical model. During my doctorate in Brazil, I participated in two Sandwich doctorate internships abroad (2018 and 2019) at the Istituto Nazionale Tumori Regina Elena, in Rome – Italy, under the supervision of the researcher Dr. Aldo Venuti, each internship lasting 6 months (August 2018 - February 2019; February 2020 – August 2020).
  • Ifo - Istituto Nazionale Tumori Regina Elena - Istituto Dermatologico San Gallicano
Phd In Genetics - Dna Vaccine Development
Ifo - Istituto Nazionale Tumori Regina Elena - Istituto Dermatologico San Gallicano Aug 2018 - Aug 2020
    Rome, Latium, Italy
During my PhD in Genetics (virology field - human papillomavirus; and Vaccine Development sub-area - Science and Technology/Innovation) I researched a therapeutic DNA multiepitope vaccine against cervical cancer in a pre-clinical model using the immunomodulator Ii-PADRE as an adjuvant for the activation of the helper response. Our data revealed that it is possible to observe a slight trend towards an increase in Th1 cytokines, lower tumor density, and lower pleomorphism in tumors of animals immunized with the plasmid multi E7 associated with Ii-PADRE, which may indicate a possible immunogenic potential of this vaccine strategy for inducing a protective cellular response. The research carried out by our group contributes to the search for increasing the survival of patients with tumors caused by HPV, a highly disseminated virus in the population.

During the master's I developed research in the field of epigenetics, and researched the relationship between sun exposure and skin cancer, through the analysis of DNA methylation in promoter regions of proto oncogenes and microRNA genes with tumor suppressor function. To this purpose, skin samples were analyzed, which were obtained from sun-exposed and sun-protected areas from 28 corpses of both sexes, aged 30-89 years with no history of skin diseases obtained from the Brazilian Service of Death Investigation. Then, the skin samples were submitted to DNA methylation analysis using Methylation Specific PCR (MSP) by previous modification of the DNA with sodium bisulfite. The research project is entitled: Influence of sun exposure on the DNA methylation profile of the MMP9 and MIR137 genes in skin cells. With this work, I won a Young Geneticist award -1 st place, master's level - during an oral presentation at the XX Genetics Meeting of the Northeast ENGENE (Brazil - 2014).
