I've been a full-time journalist for more than three decades now. In 1999, after having spent 20 years filling every position from beat and investigative reporter to business reporter to foreign correspondent to columnist to magazine editor in chief, I became one of the few journalists in the Philippines to explore ways in which news journalism can be empowered and enhanced by digital technology. I am still engaged in that exploration. With an interest in and involvement with computer technology dating back to the 1980s, I taught myself HTML and hand-coded a satirical political website, www.hotmanila.ph, in 2000, long before blogs took off. That same year I was invited to become a guest lecturer at the International Institute for Journalism (IIJ) in Berlin - later under the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit,(GIZ). I was the only Filipino journalist ever to have lectured at IIJ from 2000 to 2012, when the institute was closed. I conducted training courses on Internet journalism and print media, online newsroom management, news writing, online research; internet security and privacy; ethics, politics of the internet; basic HTML and podcasting. Participants were mid-level editors from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Central America. A full-time journalist, I am a Philippine correspondent for South China Morning Post (SCMP) as well as Radio TV Hong Kong (RTHK). I write a column for ABS-CBN news online and contribute to various local and international publications. My work has appeared in Development and Cooperation (Bonn), Time magazine, Asiaweek, USA Today, Asian Wall Street Journal, Reader's Digest, Silver Kris and Asian Dragon. I am frequently on Al Jazeera, BBC and Voice of America.I write and speak on a broad range of topics, from political and international analysis to media affairs, development issues, business, environment, urban issues, ICTs, science, travel and humor.
