I would like to be thought of as the gentlemen who prepared the beverage industry for compliance in EPA’s Vision 2020. Where Revenue is generated and tracked in place of fines and reactionary management to a well defined EPA initiatives. It is the same thing that happened in the pulp and paper industry during the mid 90’s which I still have literature from. Global Director, Business DevelopmentRecovery Systems Aug 2000 - PresentAs I began in 2000, I brought my techniques for measuring waste in the Pulp and Paper industry as one of the founding members on the Water Conservation Committee to the beverage industry. I was met with the same skeptics regarding the actual numbers I was presenting to facility management. In the Paper Industry, I began working with each application as a single ROI as well as presented Plant management and Corporate with a plant wide ROI. I was given the toughest applications right away and jumped at it with enthusiasm. I knocked the first application out before my manager knew what happened. It worked great. My boss informed me later it was the Paper machine supply pump that I was given 6 hours to convert to a new waterless technique. If it does not run, the paper machine does not run. After a dozen or more tough applications, the benefits were realized and I took the same approach to other facilities and other area reps.The beverage industry was a little different. I would do an ROI the same way. Per application and plant wide. After 33 States and 2 Providences in Canada working my plan I was shocked that the results were virtually none. I was in new territory where waste was reported on the same internal report as the yields and you can't in theory save 1,000 gallons of raw syrup a week when the plants would show a 98.9 to 99.9 % yield. After two years, A director of engineering came up with money for a trial site. We gave the same 100% customer satisfaction warranty based on the Recovery Analysis prepared in advance. The engineer selected one of the sites I had been calling on for two years. After start up, the plant manager magically came up with the money for the second Recovery System but, he wanted it installed before the crew left. Within 6 months, Recovery Systems were installed throughout the NE. Success here found me as the Southeast Representative on North.American. Pulp & Paper Committee. I grew Charlesron area $750,000 territory to 2+ million the second year while making the transition into Pulp & Paper only. All of the Conservation practice found a home when I met with friends that developed Recovery Systems for beverage industry. I began working on the PLC control panels that controlled the flow in a manner to eliminate waste by closing loops from original design of beverage production Facilities. It was several months prior to my first visit in a beverage facility when I realized the impact of the Recovery Systems. I took knowledge of calculating ROI from Pulp & Paper Ind. and applied it to Beverage Industry. Recovery Systems put together a Performance verification program in a BETA Site Package that had good success. My biggest hurdle was the non disclosure of the actual payback as all beverage companies compete for highest yields, etc... At $250,000 and a payback under 1 year the amount of raw ingredients we recover makes a plant yield numbers a little grey. While the larger companies struggled with the validity, the small companies savored the instant revenue stream. -
