Embedded Systems EngineerAllen Martin Conservation Sep 2009 - Jun 2019Allen Martin designed and install Building Management Systems.Products are designed in-house at our head office and include both hardware (for example new electronic components) and software (computer programs to help control energy use in buildings). A help desk facility is available and our Internet site provides the latest information on our products and services. Assembly and testing, including EMC compliance of prototypes and finished products is carried out in our factory. Complete turnkey contracts are co-ordinated in-house. After-sales support is provided via a comprehensive range of dynamic training courses in our purpose built suite.Over 3000 Energy Management Systems are now in operation throughout the British Isles. Customers for the stand-alone range of products are too numerous to count. Our energy management systems are installed in buildings of all sizes, from elderly person's homes to schools, offices and factories.Schemes include: Conventional heating systems - Air conditioning - Ventilation - Radiant Heating - Boiler Sequencing - Meter Reading - Statistical Data Collection - Maximum Demand Load Shedding - Lighting Control - Alarm Reporting - DDC Control - P+I - PID - Compensation - Optimum Start/Stop - EcoAllen-Martin Conservation Ltd started operation in 1984 designing, manufacturing and installing a range of stand alone electronic sensors and controls and an integrated Energy Management System. Allen-Martin has remained at the forefront of development of automatic systems, its development of a user-friendly computer graphic system has been the market leader for many years.

Software Engineer & Tech SupportCab5000 Ltd Mar 2007 - Sep 2009• Responsible for installation and configuration of the servers for the application suite. (Team size: 2)• Responsible for the design & installation of the networks at the customer sites. This meant everything from ordering the hardware to running the CAT5 cable and configuring the remote access. (Team size: 2)• Ongoing project to convert the original SCO OpenServer UNIX sustem to Ubuntu Linux. (Team size: 2)• Development of a Windows front end for the Linux server. (Team size: 2)• Development of a Geographic Utilities program using Microsoft MapPoint. The program allows the customer to draw geofencing zones onto a map of the area. The customer can also use the program to place regular pickup locations).• Regularly meeting customers to discuss ongoing support issues and new requirements.• Development of a real time communications server that managed both the existing serial communications to the radio system and added a new TCP/IP interface for the new data terminals using mobile internet technology. The server harmonised the radio and mobile internet communications. (Team size: 1)• Development of a communications protocol to run over TCP/IP that would take into account the demands of the mobile internet. (Team size: 1)• Development of a Windows Mobile 6 Taxi Data Terminal Application to talk to the server. The program is designed for use by the taxi driver. It displays job information and messages to the driver and reports the drivers status back to the base. It also returns position information to the base and uses geofencing to tell the driver which area they are currently in. The code was written in C# and C++. (Team size: 2)• The Development of a Linux Based Taxi Data Terminal. This was written in Java for a hardware platform developed by Mobile Devices in France. This device boots straight into our application which gives us greater control. (Team size: 1)• Responsible for 24 hour technical support for users of the system. (Team size: 2)

Quality ContollerCygnus Automotive Sep 2004 - Mar 2007• I was the Quality Controller for last year that I was there. This meant that I was responsible for the quality management for the entire company. The quality manual that already existed was quite verbose and often ignored so we began auditing every department and replacing the verbose work instructions with simple flow charts and story boards. I also had to introduce ISO9000:2000 into the Development Department (which had previously been exempt). -
Development EngineerCygnus Automotive May 2001 - Mar 2007• Designed an encryption system for the Taximeter Tariff using X-TEA as the cipher to enable us to use a smart card to distribute new tariff updates. I wrote a windows console application to encrypt the data and an assembly application to decrypt it in the microcontroller. (Team size: 2)• Managed the complete development life cycle of a Mobile Data Terminal for the Taxi Industry. I was assisted in the design of the electronics, wrote all of the software and designed mechanical enclosure. The unit was based on an 8-bit Atmel AVR microcontroller and had a LCD screen, GPS, a numeric keypad and various serial communication options. I wrote the low level flash memory & LCD drivers in assembly and then wrote a framework that sat on top of that in C. The framework handled the communications and display options and provided and ran the application on top of that. (Team size: 3)• Developed an active adapter bracket for LTI taxis in assembly. Our taximeter only had two relay outputs but this particular taxi has several additional lamps that needed controlling so we designed a bracket that sat behind the taximeter and provided relays for the extra lamps. In order to do this we used an 8-pin 8-bit PIC controller with an internal oscillator. The micro had to sniff the RS485 output from the taximeter and the speed pulse from the taxi it’s self and set the lamps accordingly. This is complicated by the fact that the micro had no timers, interrupts or serial port and its internal oscillator was affected by temperature changes. I wrote the solution entirely in assembly and to this day I consider it the most elegant solution I’ve ever developed.• Provided Desktop Support to a company of 20 people. On a daily basis this meant basic computer maintenance, installation of applications and replacement of broken hardware. Additional we looked after the network which meant running CAT5 cable installing network hardware and maintaining the company servers.
