Graduate Student Researcher - Pathak Lab

Current

Irvine, California

UCI Department of Physiology and Biophysics. As a graduate student under Dr. Medha Pathak, I use microscopy and single particle tracking to analyze Piezo1's mobility to determine our bodies sense mechanical forces (manuscript in revision), and how these forces shape human development. I led an innovative and highly collaborative team project coordinating cross-functional researchers of all seniority and skill levels, resulting in publications in Nature Communications and the Journal of General Physiology. I presented some of my findings at the Biophysical Society Meeting 2021, 2022 in PowerPoint and poster format. During this time, I was funded by an R01 Diversity Supplement, the F31 Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Predoctoral Fellowship to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research Grant, and the UCI Graduate Dean's Dissertation Fellowship. I also contributed heavily to and organized the submission of several high-level grants, including NIH R01 and HHMI Investigator Program grants.

Jan 2019 - Present

Phd Candidate

Irvine, California, United States

Utilized molecular biology, microscopy, and single particle tracking techniques to identify and characterize a heterogenous population of diffusive molecules (manuscripts in review). Coordinated cross-functional research project with an innovative and highly collaborative group of researchers of all seniority and skill levels, resulting in publications in Nature Communications, Journal of General Physiology. Presented findings from research projects in poster and PowerPoint presentation formats at local and national levels. Submitted multiple research grants and fellowships, resulting in over $100,000 research funding awarded to support my research project. Contributed to the submission of several high-level grants, including NIH R01.

Lead Managing Editor, Science Writer - Loh Down On Science Fellowship

Irvine

The Loh Down on Science (LDOS) is a daily humorous yet informative syndicated radio science minute, available locally, on various streaming/podcast sites (including npr.org and kpcc.org) or via the following website. As a LDOS Fellow, I reviewed and condensed scientific research into radio show format to spread scientific awareness with the nonscientific community. From October 2020 - September 2021, I was a science writer. Currently, I am the Lead Managing Editor for LDOS, where I direct and and manage a team of over 20 writers and editors to produce 100+ scripts.

Oct 2020 - Oct 2024

Staff Research Associate And Lab Manager, Mcevoy Laboratory

University Of California, Los Angeles

UCLA Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Genetics and the UCLA Institute of Society and Genetics. We aimed to understand how bacteria resist antibacterial agents, such as copper and antibiotics. As lab manager and research staff, I developed and maintained laboratory inventory, EHS laboratory safety protocols, and SOPs.During this time, I also designed synthetic genes, developed purification protocols, and evaluated protein-metal binding using molecular and structural biology and biochemistry techniques, resulting in a Journal of Biological Chemistry publication.

Oct 2016 - Aug 2018

Undergraduate Researcher, Eisenberg Laboratory

University Of California, Los Angeles

UCLA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Molecular Biology Institute.Amyloid fibril proteins are misfolded proteins and are a common factor in many diseases, such as Alzheimer's Disease, type-2 diabetes, and systemic light amyloidosis. Under the supervision of Dr. David Eisenberg and Dr. Boris Brumshtein, I studied amyloid fibril formation in systemic light chain amyloidosis. Using site-directed mutagenesis, x-ray crystallography, and binding and screening assays, we aimed to understand the underlying structural basis of amyloid fibrils. During my time in the Eisenberg lab, I worked closely with Dr. Brumshtein to identify amyloid-forming peptides within immunoglobulin protein. My time in this lab resulted in publications in the Journal of Biological Chemistry and eLife.

Oct 2014 - Oct 2016

Msd Scholar

Ucla

As a CARE and MSD Scholar, I worked in the Eisenberg laboratory through funding from NIH GM055052. I had the opportunity to present my research at the ABRCMS 2015 Conference in Seattle, Washington.
