The position of Managing Director EMEA was created to take advantage of the strategic growth opportunities within the region. I established the ME base and travelled extensively during this period assessing future sites and negotiating contracts. During the 2 year period I successfully negotiated and signed approx 20 MOU,s and MA,s, across Morocco and Europe adding circa 10 million to the value of the company for each signed management agreement. At the same time I was also responsible for operations within EMEA, this encompassed the opening of Ma’in, Jordan a 97 room Evason property and the Zighy Bay property in Oman with 82 villas and all new Spa operations including the set up of the first and business class lounges for Etihad . I was assisted in this task with support from the development team in Asia.
Phuket, Thailand
Overseeing the Evason Phuket property as the General Manager.Develop 2 properties : A Six Senses property on Koh Yao Noi and a New Brand The Destination spa on Naka. Phuket , Thailand
A 260 key property with roughly 500 hosts. Six Senses acquired this property in 2001 and refurbished the property to bring it to the level of an Evason resort and spa. I was brought in as a trouble shooter initially to address the complicated union issues and to make the operation profitable. This I achieved within 2 years, whilst having to overcome challenges such as bird flu, SARS, government advisories, Bali bombing and the Tsunami
Europe
After Soneva Fushi I partnered with a Soneva guest who shared a vision to open a 5 star property in Europe. We extensively travelled Europe to identify potential heritage sites with suitable land to build Europes first all pool villa product. We identified several potential sites in Mallorca and France. We pursued an old monastery site north of the Luberon and South of the Ventoux Mountain. Feasibilities , business plans and project briefs were all done. Unfortunately due to September 11th the investor pulled out and I was unable to finance the project.
Maldives
Following an opening in 1995 I took on the property in 1998, no systems, procedures, policies or a business plan were in place. Within a year I had firmly established the business with a proper business plan that identified where we planned to take the property. This included but wasn’t limited to a sound HR system, performance management system, sales and marketing plan, budget, capex, goals and objectives, vision, mission statement, core values, standard operating procedures and a diagnostic of the business. In addition we added a further 10 villas, 2 host blocks, a spa and an additional restaurant. Within 2 years on a turnover of 10 million we delivered a net profit of 25% and we won the ‘Conde Nast Traveller best of the best and best resort in the world’ September 2000, just before my departure.
Kilifi, Kenya
A property previously owned by Lord Heskith, the original formula One giant. I was employed by Batian management to refurbish and reopen the property to its formal glory. I successfully established the property with a full compliment of staff and contracts in place.
Glasgow
I took on this property soon after the opening. At a time when the company was being heavily scrutinised I delivered a healthy bottom/top line revenue to the owning company, which was crucial to gain investor backing for the proposed expansion. Top line achieved £1,300,000.00. Bottomline £353.000.00 in the first year. In first year of operation we achieved an 86% occupancy year round. Created a strong, knowledgeable and empowered team that effectively delivered high standards of service and a unique concept to the guests.Instrumental in initiating and creating highly effective systems and procedures that have been adopted for use in new Malmaison Hotels. Due to the success of the first Malmaison Hotels in Glasgow & Edinburgh, Malmaison gained the backing to expand to Newcastle, Leeds & Manchester. It then became the target of a £60M buyout by America's Patriot Group whom plan to invest £200M expanding the Malmaison concept into Europe & America.
