About Alassane Mbengue

From Prof Gordon Awandare WACCBIP Ghana"Since returning to Senegal, he has gradually integrated himself into the research and public health ecosystem. Dr Mbengue’s research has mostly been aimed towards deciphering drug resistance mechanisms in malaria. Together with his well-trained students from University Cheikh Anta Diop Dakar, they have successfully carried out in vitro experiments using clinical malaria isolates from Ghana and Senegal. His hard work and focus on translational research have earned him promotion to Research Fellow at Institut Pasteur Dakar. As a Crick African Network fellowship he has mobilized fundings to provide equipment to his lab and built capacity at field stations in Kedougou.At the regional level, Alassane has been involved in Microscopy training platforms in the continent. He is a member of the scientific advisory board of African Bioimaging Consortium (ABIC) and has contributed to funds mobilization for ABIC based in Cape Town (SA). ABIC is a catalyst to empower and grow life science research in Africa by addressing needs for training, education, and accessibility of microscopy technologies. In addition, he has partnered with other experts in microscopy and bioimaging data management from Berlin to establish the West African Microscopy and Bioimaging Data Analysis Network known as WAMBIAN (www.wambian.org). Through WAMBIAN, they have mobilized resources and organized five workshops since 2018, where Dr Mbengue has thought practical sessions of immunofluorescence assays, passing on skills he acquired during his PhD and postdoctoral research in the USA.In addition, to his expertise in basic science research, Alassane has made significant efforts in community engagement activities, promoting health in close collaboration with communities living in Senegalese semi-rural areas. Through a festival (FAW) he started, he has demonstrated entrepreneurial skills and helped raise awareness about diabetes and cervical cancer. I am convinced that with his tenacity, this innovative culture-based initiative could serve as a model to developing Biotech to monitor and evaluate disease diagnostics and develop a comprehensive roadmap against stigmatization."

“Mesures Spéciales Senegal”: Manufacturing and Access to Vaccines, Medicines and health technology products (MSS-MAV+).The MSS-MAV+ program has two main objectives: (i) to revitalize skills-based training at a higher education level in order to overcome the biomanufacturing qualified human resources shortage in the country and (ii) Build up a Senegal-based regional hub for Research, Development and Innovation in biomedical sciences and pharmaceutical businessEXPECTED RESULTS:  Reconceptualization University training programs:A technical framework will be provided to accompany Master programs in industrial development, medicines and health production at FMPO_UCAD. New skills-based teaching approach will be implemented through an international collaborative transfer technology platform. Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I)A hub will be developed to nurture R&D&I and business in pharmaceutical industry. Early careers from research institutions, staff from pharmaceutical industries, students will have access to well designed training sessions in clinical trials, and cutting-edge translational research. Alongside grant writing and the wider digital revolution, our action will offer innovative approaches to develop new skills required for strong and sustainable leadership. MSS-MAV+’s overall aim is to foster emerging national industrial champions, thereby helping consolidate the pharmaceutical sovereignty of Senegal. By strengthening local production capacities, the project will reduce the high level of imports of medical products, boost competitive business models that fits with the regional demands to ensure for a sustainable economic growth and importantly support local jobs.
