I have been actively involved in diabetes care, education, advocacy, and research since 2008, and have dedicated my career to improving the lives of people with diabetes. At Breakthrough T1D I serve as associate vice president, community screening and clinical trial education, with a focus on accelerating progress toward cures for type 1 diabetes. Previously, I was a faculty member and director of diabetes education and clinic operations at the University of Florida College of Medicine, Division of Pediatric Endocrinology. I am interested in better ways to deliver diabetes education, improve access to diabetes technology, and improve quality in care, and have published peer-reviewed manuscripts on these topics in leading journals. I continue to collaborate with other clinician scientists and diabetes care and education specialists in this area of inquiry, and recently founded a Florida-based non-profit, Diabetes Toolkit. I am a licensed and board certified pediatric nurse practitioner (CPNP-PC) and certified diabetes care and education specialist (CDCES). I am also certified to train people with diabetes to use insulin pumps, CGMs, and automated insulin delivery systems. I have been an avid diabetes advocate since 2002, and in this capacity have spoken at congressional hearings, at the White House, and in the Florida legislature. I believe children with diabetes should have equal opportunities, and have co-authored guidelines related to diabetes management in the school setting. Prior to transitioning to a career in diabetes care and research, I had the privilege of working at Southwest Airlines under Herb Kelleher's leadership, where I served as the highest-ranking executive for the company in Southern California. I plan to retire as soon as a cure for type 1 diabetes is discovered, but not a moment earlier.
