Advisor: Raymond SchaakUtilized few-layer defect-rich transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) as an ideal platform to determine mechanistic details underlying the selectivity of these materials towards the hydrogenation of nitroarenes. Mechanistic insights were drawn from microscopic evidence as well as collaborative computational studies.Investigated bulk-immiscible noble metal alloys and surface-nanostructured bulk crystals as highly active electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. Developed scalable solution-based synthetic methods for the growth of immiscible alloy nanoparticles.Experienced in air-free techniques for the synthesis of inorganic materials, including Schlenk line and glovebox use, solution synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles, high temperature bulk powder synthesis, flame sealing of evacuated ampules, and flux growth of single crystals.

Prepared students for upcoming CHEM 210 exams at office hours through translation of problem-solving skills and effective test-taking strategies.

Advisor: Dr. Judith Amburgey-PetersMade progress towards the synthesis of a phospholipid analog to be used for the characterization of its calcium dependent binding to protiens. Resulted in an ~80 page thesis and an oral defense. Received grade of Honors on thesis.
