In 1987 I tested positive for HIV and have dedicated my life through volunteering, story- telling, public speaking and presently employed as the Executive Director working with the Northern Healthy Connections Society. With the changing realities and the changing data pertaining to HIV & HCV Co-Infection, the work of the Northern Healthy Connections Society (NHCS) became more open and inclusive working with various marginalized and stigmatized populations. The key focus of the work is to address the needs of the marginalized through the lens of Harm Reduction and Social Determinants of Health outlined by Health Canada. The organization works primarily with individuals living with a substance dependency, mental health challenges and addictions. The mandate of NHCS is to address the substance use and overdose prevention in the northern zone of Nova Scotia through a Harm Reduction promising model of practice. This model is to provide the service of Needle Distribution and Disposal, where sterile injection equipment is provided to minimize the risk of infection. NHCS considers this model of practice to be no different than ensuring our children are safely buckled-in all vehicles, making sure helmets are worn to prevent injury to the head or something as every day and simple as crosswalks and traffic lights. Substances are more than Opioids.
