Engineering Manager, R&D

Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States

Utilizing my technical expertise, I manage an R&D group to develop advanced testing techniques to characterize high efficiency III-V solar cells and to qualify them for a variety of space/planetary environments.- Acted as a technical lead on a variety of projects oriented towards the development of advanced solar cells- Interface with internal and external customers as an area expert.- Organized and prioritized projects/tasks within my group to meet AoP goals.- Responsible for planning and adhering to a department budget.- As my team was split between production engineers and R&D/Qualification engineers, I routinely need to design a wholistic plan between production, R&D, and operations to ensure a high quality of test and advance the test area to meet both production engineering and operational needs.

Principal Engineer, R&D

Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States

Utilizing advanced knowledge of materials, electrochemistry, and electrical engineering I developed and validated testing platforms, problem solved manufacturing issues, and developed proper process controls to ensure a high quality of manufacturing for next generation III-V solar cells. These include:• Utilizing design of experiments, would develop daily experiments to separate probably causes for issues and help to advance our toolsets, ensure proper calibration of the tools, and the production of a high-quality product.• Designed, scoped, and validated custom solar simulators to effectively test cutting edge III-V multijunction photovoltaics.• Developed a novel test setup to compare standards between formfactors to ensure a consistent calibration. • Routinely troubleshooted test tools including Light IV, Quantum Efficiency, Dark IV, electroluminescent, and capacitance setups. • Managed ‘out-of-specification’ investigations to track down root cause and implement corrective actives.• Routinely worked closely with other engineers to accomplish the following: (1) To give feedback on possible causes of issues that relate to a process and help develop a solution. (2) Bring together multiple disciplines of engineering to effectively design tools and parts for our testing processes. (3) Troubleshoot complex problems to ensure the most efficient path is taken when drilling into an issue.• Created and managed a biweekly seminar to help engineers understand advanced technical principals for III-V solar cells.

Graduate Research Assistant

Albuquerque, New Mexico Area

• Designing and conducted experiments for the analysis and characterization of enzymatic fuel cells utilizing electrochemical techniques. Specifically concentrating on silica encapsulation of these bio-catalysts and why this encapsulation reduces enzyme activity as observed by a reduction in current. • Designed a novel enzymatic and inorganic hybrid catalyst, on a conductive graphene support, for the sequential oxidation of organic substrates. These systems were then characterized utilizing Potentiostats (Cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, etc), SEM, TEM, UV-VIS, FTIR-ATR, Confocal Raman spectroscopy, XPS, XRD, and BET. • Created several Matlab programs to analyze FTIR-ATR data as well as images from microfluidic devices, cutting down analysis time severely.• Presented work at three conferences: ECS Orlando (2014), ECS Phoenix (2015), and ISE Providence (2017)• 3 accepted publications:1. Matanovic, I., Babanova, S., Perry III, A., Serov, A., Artyushkova, K., & Atanassov, P. (2015). Bio-inspired design of electrocatalysts for oxalate oxidation: a combined experimental and computational study of Mn–N–C catalysts. Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, 17(20), 13235-13244.2.
