The “Business Owners Show” originally started as “The Entrepreneurs Show” and aired on AM radio station WTMY Sarasota 1280. After a couple years of interviews, it was changed to a blog format to better allow global participation. The show is a platform for business owners to share their success stories, lessons learned, and carry forward ideas that work. We are now converting the blog to a video format.

During this period Bohdan Automation was wholly acquired by Mettler-Toledo International Inc. (MTD, NYSE) based in Switzerland. I facilitated corporate transfer of technology and information. My division became known as Mettler-Toledo AutoChem. MTD engages in research, development, manufacture and marketing of precision instruments in Europe, North and South America and Asia.

During this period, Bohdan Automation became venture capital backed company which experienced a nearly doubling in sales for 5 years in a row. At the end of 1998 we had over 100 scientists, engineers, and professionals who addressed a multitude of applications in the laboratory automation market world-wide. We had offices in Europe, Asia, and throughout the USA. Our clients were most of the pharmaceutical and bio-pharmaceutical companies involved in various aspects of discovering new drugs. We focused on total robotics solutions for combinatorial chemistry, sample preparation and sample processing. We had workstations for chemical synthesis of new compounds and the follow up high throughput screening to identify candidates for further study. This and many other laboratory robotics and workstation products gave Bohdan Automation world recognition and a base for excellent growth.

Bohdan Automation was started by my father and myself as a machine shop and quickly grew into one of the main industrial automation companies in the Midwest. Originally our services included the concept, design, manufacture and servicing of dedicated automation for manufacturing and inspection. As the company grew various robotics solutions, both custom and off the shelf, were the mainstay of our business. Our clients were the food, automotive, electronics, electrical, consumer, and hospital products industries. There were over 100 clients with the majority being Fortune 1000 listed. After about 10 years the focus became mainly in the pharmaceutical, bio-pharmaceutical, chemical and bio-medical areas. Our robotic solutions automated the manufacturing and or testing of hospital products, in-vitro devices, blood testing equipment, medical devices, instrumentation, and chemical in line testing as well as testing of many lab processes. We developed many processes and generated multiple patents that set the pace for future equipment that today is a mainstay of laboratory automation in many applications. In the 90’s Bohdan Automation’s knowledge in robotics was integrated into a new family of moderately priced products called the Discovery Series which was specifically designed for laboratories regardless of size, industry type or function. This product line automated liquid dispensing, powder dispensing, weighing, pipetting, mixing, incubation, homogenizing, ph, liquid/liquid extractions, liquid/solid extractions, centrifugation, capping, evaporations, filtration and labeling.

Acrobe was a venture capital backed start up which developed and built a fully articulated robot to automate manufacturing processes in the medical device and testing industries. The company was entrepreneurial in its nature and accomplished numerous patents, showings and interest. In many ways it was years ahead of the industry norms of that time period. It was successfully sold to a private investment group in Florida.
