Coding Theory For Distributed Computation Msc Thesis

Gothenburg, Sweden

We rely on coding theory for efficient error detection and correction in all our communication systems. My thesis consisted of researching extensions of this concept into distributed computation. The notion is that we can use coding theory to improve performance and reliability by viewing machines that fail, or make mistakes, as noise. My results were published at the 2017 International Symposium on Information Theory.

Automation Engineer

V2X Communications Developer

Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge: Chalmers Car Team

Gothenburg, Sweden

In the Grand Cooperative Driving Challenge university teams compete in building a vehicle that can communicate with other vehicles to perform maneuvers such as lane merging autonomously.I joined the team as second-in-command, and responsible for the communication system. There were off-the-shelf communication units, but all in the thousands of euro range, and none that fit our needs. So I assembled a system from cheap hardware and open-source components.Vehicles communicate via ITS-G5, which differs from WiFi, but you can make some WiFi cards support it with driver modifications. I also found open-source libraries for the higher layers of the communication stack. My work thus consisted of assembling the components that would solve our problem, and to write the Java code that would tie it all together.I tested my system with the help of Volvo, and when I shared my work the organizers and most other competitors used it.Cooperation was scored, and needless to say our team got almost all points.

Visible Light Communication Bsc Thesis

Gothenburg, Sweden

The Signals and Systems department at Chalmers always has plenty of exciting BSc thesis opportunities, and in spring 2015 me and five other students started our thesis on visible light communication (VLC). With the support of our examiner Erik Agrell and our supervisor Cristian Bogdan Czegledi we built a fully functioning system that would do arbitrary communication via light. The system was built on a single-board computer, and featured of a Linux network driver that would display the VLC as a network interface and handle data formatting, error detection and re-transmission. The hardware implementation was also designed by us and consisted of some pretty neat filtering and automatic gain control. It was the first time any of us did communication system design, but amazingly it all worked! There's, of course, an excellent TED presentation that we took inspiration from.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaoSp4NpkGg
