Research concering cost-effective technologies for the removal of nitrogen from waterDuring my time as a PhD student at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, I've been a participant in a larger research project called 'miNing'. The purpose of miNing has been to identify treatment technologies suitable for the removal of nitrogen from water in mine environments such that nitrogen levels are in agreement with current Swedish and International legislation. I've had shared responsibility for the construction, monitoring/sampling, and evaluation of a denitrifying woodchip bioreactor installed for the removal of nitrate from mine and process water at the Kiruna mine site in Kiruna, northern Sweden. The bioreactor was operational for two years (2015-2016) and the intended treatment was successful with the constructed bioreactor removing ~25 mg N/L as nitrate to below detection limits during optimized treatment conditions. The technology has been used in other contamination settings, for example to treat agricultural runoff, but has had few applications within the mining industry. My main research interests during my PhD studies has been how the efficiency of denitrification (main nitrate removal process in the bioreactor) is affected by various environmental conditions, and how the efficiency of denitrification may be increased through the conditioning of parameters related to the design and operation of woodchip bioreactors.I successfully defended my thesis the 17th of May 2019.2. TeachingI've also been participating as a teacher (~15%) in first and second cycle education held at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University. I've mostly been involved in education concerning water discharge measurements, geotechnical methods concerning groundstability, geochemical modeling of aqueous systems (PHREEQC), preparation of drinking water, and various environmental measurement methods.
