What could have been a weakness in his service Alec turned into an opportunity to further innovate the Health Education program by approaching every lesson topic with careful deliberation of the perfect deliverance to his students, his partners, and his community. I witnessed this first-hand during our time collaborating in summer school lessons in the first months of our training, and again at the end of our service while working together on the design of COVID-19 related educational materials. In addition to his technical accomplishments, Alec also mastered integration into a new, unfamiliar culture. From the start of our training, he established himself as committed to learning the Moldovan language so that he could better connect with his in-country partners. Other volunteers learned from his skillful assimilation to his assigned workplace and site, which is of course no easy task. He possesses a dedication to understanding the experiences and circumstances of those around him unlike any other volunteer in our cohort, and this allowed him to become a fixture in his community while still maintaining respectful boundaries with his Moldovan counterparts. Although our time together in Moldova has ended, I look forward to keeping in contact with Alec for further collaboration.
