Sr. Director Of User Experience

Vancouver, British Columbia, Ca

As the Senior Director of UX, I consider how UX can support Unbounce as it enters a phase where we set increasingly ambitious targets and become more driven and focused. How can we create business value through customer experiences?Activation/Onboarding, Adoption and Engagement:The company has all the ingredients to create customer value. As Director of UX, I ensured we had a deep understanding of the customer problems, worked extensively with our customer value teams to optimize our Discovery process focusing on speed to deliver value, strong delivery processes and tools (e.g. design system), and had been integral in creating a culture of experimentation across the company. My current focus is to build teams and collaboration opportunities to support creating customer experiences across the customer journey that focus on leading customers to that value and keeping them engaged. To hit our ambitious targets, experimentation has become key. I identified the following requirements to be successful in this experimentation: create effective customer experiences, speed up experimentation/learning cycles and work collaboratively across units. To ensure our experiences would affect change in customer behaviour, I led the creation of a UX Playbook based on human psychology principles and research. The Playbook allows those creating user experiences across the company to answer a series of questions to determine which principles to apply to achieve the business value goals they are focused on.Not every experiment is a winner and we have limited time to make traction so I worked with our data team to set us up to run parallel experiments to maximize our speed of learning and iterate towards a winning experience. I work closely with Customer Success leaders to ensure collaboration is possible and prioritized as we know from past experience that we can speed up our learning and amplify our experiments by working closely with the Customer-facing teams.

Director Of User Experience

Vancouver, British Columbia, Ca

10 months in to my UX Lead role at Unbounce the company was growing and the Director of User Experience role opened up. In taking on this new role, I was excited about the opportunity to have greater influence through UX across the company and to continue to grow my people management skills.Team Development:The structure of the team I inherited did not support our current state as a company. It was important that I create a model that would support the present day needs but could also grow as Unbounce grew. Three years later this model is still in place and has allowed us to grow from a team of 5 Product designers to a team of 10 Product Designers/User Researchers/UX Writers. Strategy Development:At the end of 2018, we had refocused our target segment and were struggling aligning it to the existing strategy. We had a low understanding of this new target segment but we knew the key to a strong strategy would be to base it off of the customer problems of marketers in this new segment. We needed a deep understanding of these marketers. To achieve this, I designed, organized and conducted a substantial ethnography/contextual inquiry to fill this learning gap. The results of this study helped us refine the strategy and a year later we were able to raise $52 million Canadian based in large part on the updated strategy.Productizing AI/ML Capabilities:Our strategy looked to pair a marketer's own creativity and know-how with the power of AI to solve customer problems and ultimately help marketers grow their businesses. Designing for AI comes with its own challenges, including overcoming lack of trust in this technology. Through extensive research under my direction, we created proven guidelines for increasing trust in Al features. I also played an integral role in bringing the first high value AI features to market for Unbounce. We would go on to release 8 AI features by the end of 2021 resulting in stronger Key SaaS metrics for customers that adopted them.

Ux Lead

Vancouver, British Columbia, Ca

I accepted the Product Design lead role at Unbounce shortly after attending an Unbounce Open House where I met co-founders and several Product Design team members. I knew Unbounce would be a perfect place for me to grow and where I could use my 12 years of UX experience to help grow a team of Product Designers.Mentorship, Coaching and Core Capability Development:Once onboarded with a full understanding of the company's vision and business strategy, my first priority was to analyze the company's UX needs against the UX team's core capabilities and experience. Through this analysis, I was able to create a plan to close gaps in core UX capabilities needed by the business. Before I started at Unbounce, User Research was mostly outsourced to a freelancer and often the quality of data collected was poor. This made it very difficult to find themes, signals or learnings in the data. With many years of User Research experience and education under my belt, I went on to formalize the User Research discipline by creating processes, checklists, templates and shared spaces for communicating results, learnings and recommendations. To keep the quality of data collected high, I knew we would need to keep UR activities in house but this was one of the large gaps in the design team that I had identified at the beginning. To close this gap, I created and conducted an intense UR bootcamp through a series of workshops.Harnessing my strength of Individualization, I sought out to understand what each designer's coaching and mentoring needs were. To do this I shadowed each designer in their respective Product teams and paired on at least one design.Within 10 months of starting as lead, we had completed 10 user research studies in-house and I had individual growth plans for each designer.
