Project coordination of the Newcastle Emission Reduction Plan project.

The Newcastle Climate Action Summit was held at Newcastle City Hall on Saturday 18 November 2023. The summit brought together diverse organisations to develop a comprehensive strategy to reduce Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Newcastle. This is the first city-wide strategy with emission reduction actions for transport and waste, households, commerce and industry.In a context where a wide spectrum of voices are now talking about the issue of climate change as an emergency, attendees heared from local scientific, policy experts and advocates, and had the opportuntity to have their voice heard on ways to come together across sectors and interests to address this threat.

In the role of a project officer, Alec develops and manages content on School of Environmental and Life Sciences initiatives on environmental sustainability across media platforms – website, e-newsletter, and social media. Alec also coordinates events, forums and conferences held by the School of Environmental and Life Sciences and Faculty of Science at University of Newcastle.

Norfolk Island Environmental AssessmentUndertook a research project involving assessment of technologies and systems that have applicability on Norfolk Island that could be considered to redress existing unsustainable practices in energy management to inform discussion of long‐term population targets and carrying capacity of Norfolk Island.

CLEANaS has been established as a not-for-profit incorporated association. CLEANaS aims to drive the uptake of renewable energy generation technologies in Newcastle and surrounds. We aim to do this through developing projects to provide opportunities for community funded renewable energy installations and by running events and initiatives to educate members about the opportunities that exist in participating in clean energy.The Chair is responsible for the proper conduct of CLEANaS Steering Committee meetings and represents the group in dealings with the media and other organisations.

Assisted with delivering the 9th Annual Best Practice Ecological Rehabilitation of Mined Lands Conference (2019) . This Mine Rehab conference is being organised by CRC Care in partnership with the Hunter Environmental Institute.The main theme of this event explored the best practice approaches regarding management of the rehabilitation of mined lands.

Alec commenced with the Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment (TFI) in2015. In the role of a project officer, Alec develops and manages content onTFI initiatives on environmental sustainability across the TFI media platforms –website, e-newsletter, and social media. Alec also coordinates events, forumsand conferences held by the TFI.

The 8th Annual Best Practice Ecological Rehabilitation of Mined Lands Conference (2018) was organised by the Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment (TFI) in partnership with the Hunter Environmental Institute.The main theme of this event was exploring the best possible practice approaches regarding management of the rehabilitation of mined lands. International speakers attending the event shared their expertise and providing new, global research on the topic. The conference was a resounding success, with over 260 attendees, making it one of the largest mining rehabilitation conferences in Australia.

The Active Transport: The Richmond Vale Rail Trail Conference aimed at addressing the local benefits of an active transport system, and in identifying areas such as the Richmond Vale Rail Trail (RVRT) that could be converted into a highly utilised system and corridor for active transport.

The 7th Annual Best Practice Ecological Rehabilitation of Mined Lands Conference (2017) was organised by the Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment (TFI).This annual conference is a significant event on the Hunter Region calendar. It provides an important avenue for TFI to promote the use of best-practice approaches in the management of rehabilitation of mined lands.
