Alejandra Colón-López, Ph.D. Email and Phone Number
My research focuses on medical education and health disparities. In my dissertation project, I use Sequential Explanatory Mixed Methods to examine gender disparities in general surgical training. The quantitative part of my dissertation examines the relationship between residents’ gender and attending-resident trust. I seek to explain attendings’ entrustment by residents’ gender, postgraduate year, and the number of surgeries they have participated in with the same trainer. For the qualitative portion of my dissertation, I interviewed 17 attendings and ten residents. I analyze the interviews through an abductive coding approach, which allows me to seek patterns previously described by other researchers while being open to emergent, unforeseen themes. During my last two years of doctoral training, I worked as a research assistant at the UAB Medicine Office of Wellness for the Director of Research, Dr. Katherine Meese. Through this appointment, I assessed healthcare workers’ well-being and analyzed, along with other healthcare administration experts, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the US healthcare system. Outside my research in medical education and healthcare wellness, I dedicated part of my academic work to health outcomes research. As a graduate student at the UAB Department of Sociology, I contributed to a wide variety of undergraduate courses as a teaching assistant, from general classes, such as Introduction to Sociology, Sociology of Sex and Gender, and Race and Ethnicity, to more advanced courses, e.g., Minority Health, Sociology of Mental Health. I also taught as an independent instructor of Sociology of Social Media, Introduction to Medical Sociology, and Social Statics laboratories. As a Medical Education Postdoctoral scholar, I examined learning environment data to identify factors associated with unequal training among traditionally minoritized populations in medicine and develop institutional policies for cultivating equitable learning experiences for all medical students.
