Profile bio

About Alejandro/Alex Gener

I am a non-traditional biomedical scientist. Currently on the Editorial Board of AIDS (https://journals.lww.com/aidsonline/pages/editorialboard.aspx). I also consult as a pathogen and sequencing subject matter expert. As a part of my interest in medical education, I have consulted students sitting for the Step 1 of the US Medical Licensure Exam. Science-wise, I am an expert in HIV pathogenesis and sequencing. I have acquired extensive experience in SARS-COV-2 genomics (https://nanoporetech.com/resource-centre/video/lc22/assembly-deconvolution-resolves-sars-cov-2-haplotypes-in-delta-omicron-co-infections), and have been studying Candida auris (https://github.com/GenerGener/Candida_auris) and human monkeypox virus (https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.09.06.22279633v1) genomes and genomic analyses. I have extensive experience with project management, teamwork, and experience with grant writing. My technical skills include long-read (Nanopore and PacBio) and short-read Illumina DNA and RNA sequencing, genome assembly, transcript modeling, molecular cloning, and sequencing quality control. I recently completed a Bioinformatics Fellowship funded by the Association of Public Health Laboratories and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, working at the Los Angeles County Public Health Laboratories.During my PhD I revisited HIV with new sequencing methods, and establishing HIV Informatics as a framework to maximize information from HIV samples. I developed a tractable approach to generate HIV transcript models, prioritize them, and discovered multiple new open reading frames. This more than doubled the known protein-coding capacity of the HIV-1 genome. The new transcript models are available here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/MZ242719.1. Noteworthy is that the most common integrase isoform supported by these analyses is GENER4-integrase, a novel isoform MZ242752.1; https://journals.lww.com/aidsonline/Citation/2022/01010/Anticipating_HIV_drug_resistance_with_appropriate.16.aspx. I took a leave before my fourth year of medical school. At UCC, I served as Interim President of the Class of 2014 in the fall of 2010, Community Service Intervention MS1 Group Leader, Pharmacology (Class) Representative from 2011-2012, Internal Medicine Clerkship Representative for Track C, and President and Clinic Director of Clinicas Padre Venard since July of 2013.

Listed skills include Immunology, Molecular Biology, Research, Healthcare, and 35 others.
