About Alejo Maggini

Alejo Maggini is a Program Associate in Meridian Institute’s Washington, D.C. office. He works on a variety of international projects focusing on regenerative food systems, just transitions, community engagement and empowerment, and oceans and coastal management in close collaboration with farmers, Indigenous Peoples, and local leaders worldwide. At Meridian, Alejo has facilitated multi-stakeholder convenings and initiatives, including the Frontline Community Delegation-a delegation of 45+ Global South leaders working at the frontline of climate action, food systems transformation, and community resilience that Meridian convened and supported to participate at multiple United Nations’ Framework Convention on Climate Change’s annual Conference of Parties (COP27 and COP28). A conflict resolution practitioner, Alejo resonates with Meridian’s mission of empowering individuals, communities, and institutions to find collaborative solutions to today’s interconnected challenges.Prior to joining Meridian, Alejo addressed global issues in local contexts through several community-centered projects related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Working with the Young Initiative on the Global Political Economy and the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, he co-authored reports on transformative and community-driven accountability measures to dismantle structural racism and inspire necessary healing and truth processes in the City of Los Angeles. During the United Nations’ 76th Session of the General Assembly, Alejo represented the delegation of Costa Rica in the Fourth Committee of Special Political and Decolonization, focusing on peacekeeping operations, humanitarian affairs, and diplomatic relations.In his free time, Alejo volunteers as safeguarding and student support lead for United World Colleges, a global education movement for peace and sustainability. He loves learning new dance styles, discovering new places, and practicing languages. Originally from Mendoza, Argentina, he will never miss the opportunity to invite you to visit his hometown or cook you a traditional dish (his specialty is cappelletti con tuco!).

    During this period, my projects at Meridian included: Frontline Community Delegations: Convened delegations that have supported a total of 70+ Indigenous Peoples, farmers, women, youth, and local leaders from the Global South working at the frontlines of food systems transformation, community resilience, and climate change to participate at COP27 in Sharm-El Sheikh, Egypt, and COP28, Dubai, UAE. Developed training materials and conducted media, logistics, and climate and food-related trainings in four languages. Hosted multi-stakeholder convenings to facilitate participants' engagement with governments, philanthropies, businesses, and aligned initiatives.Regen10: Assisted with the daily management, strategy design, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement of a multimillion-dollar partnership focused on amplifying the impact of regenerative practices globally to transform food systems to benefit people, nature, and the planet through farmer centric and deeply inclusive approaches.Foster & Gather Summit: Co-hosted and facilitated a three-day convening to accelerate alternatives to animal factory farming with 70+ participants across the domestic food value chain in Charlotte, North Carolina. Developed a report on the state of the US food industry, existing and emerging trends, and recommendations to engage diverse stakeholders to transform the domestic food system through inclusive, nourishing, and environmentally friendly initiatives. Iniciativa por los Mares y las Costas de Mexico: Managed the program’s implementation plan, budget, and reporting processes across five different grants initiative to advance the integral protection of oceans and coasts. Developed the initiative’s governance, ways of working, and program administration to support its transition into an autonomous Mexican-led organization.

    Co-led a 15-student team to research avenues to rebuild social resilience in the City of Los Angeles from a community-centered approach through collective art and memorialization, institutional responsibility-taking, and effective mediums for intentional community healing, reparations, and transformative justice. Developed the 100-page report Truth in Los Angeles: Addressing Racial Injustice through Recognition, Responsibility, and Repair, outlining the potential to establish a community-centered Truth Commission in the City of Los Angeles and presented the proposed recommendations to the Chief Equity Officer, the Cultural Heritage Commission, and International Affairs Office. Supervised the Occidental’s Spring 2021 Task Force focused on truth-telling, accountability, racial justice, and community healing for the City of Los Angeles and guided the Task Force's research, analysis, and interviews processes to draft a plan of action to address deeply-rooted issues of racism and trauma through transformative justice as requested by the Los Angeles Mayor’s Office and the Chief Equity Office. Designed and taught the course syllabus, incorporating city officials’ feedback and my experiences with restorative justice, conflict resolution, and mediation. During Summer 2021, I represented the team in a public presentation to the Cultural Heritage Commission of the City of Los Angeles and the Deputy Mayor for Economic Opportunity.
