I am providing service as an area controller (ACC) in Warsaw FIR. My main responsibility isto give instructions and clearances to pilots in order to prevent collisions and maintain asmooth and orderly flow of air traffic. Also, I attend regular training and assessment (boththeoretical and practical) and participate in team resource management (TRM) sessionswhere I learn about operational human performance and teamwork in ATM operations.Sessions like this also allow me to exchange experience with other operational staffworking in the company. In general, I have to stay up to date with many operationaldocuments and aviation data (e.g. operational instructions, letters of agreement,Aeronautical Information Service publications). I willingly take part in testing newsolutions for the ATM system, both in Poland (e.g. PANSA - introduction of PEGASUS_21ATC system, introduction of vertical division of airspace) and abroad (e.g. EurocontrolInnovation Hub in Brétigny-sur-Orge - CPDLC multi element uplink messages andautomation, as a part of the SESAR project).

During the training for an air traffic controller, I had to pass a theoretical BASIC course ( ~16 weeks) covering the fundamental principles on e.g. the theory of flight, aircraftoperations, air traffic services, airspace classification and aviation english. During thiscourse I got to know many important documents i.e. ICAO Annex 2 - Rules of the Air, ICAOAnnex 11 - Air Traffic Services, ICAO Doc 4444 - Air Traffic Management (ATM) andAeronautical Information Publication for Poland. Then, I attended a RATING course ( ~ 6weeks), that focused on the aspects of radar control principles and techniques. Bothcourses were followed up by theoretical exam sessions, which after succesful completionallowed me to start training on the simulator ( ~ 6 months), which ended in obtaining a SATCLStudent Air Traffic Controller Licence. Finally, I started on-the-job training in order toobtain qualification for area control ( ~ 10 months) and after the final exam (theory,simulator and on-the-job) I started independent work with an ATCL licence for areacontrol (ACC).
