Large parts of my life has been spent in international level sailboat racing. Sailboat racing at that level is, in essence, a question of who is best at making decisions under uncertainty and to learn from their past decisions to maximize their future decision-making ability. At the highest levels boat speed and technical skills are almost identical between competitors and the results boil down to who does what in anticipation of known and unknown environmental factors, both with an unknown future, but also with wildly differing degrees of uncertainty, leading to very different risk appetite and appropriate leverage. In addition all decisions need to take into account the potential actions of other players reacting to the same factors as well as your own decisions.This background had made me very interested in decision-making systems and how to optimize decisions. My education in Mathematics, Statistics, Informatics, and Data Science has drawn me into the realm of automated decision making systems where I like to pull on my background from sailing and my experience in handling known and unknown uncertainties, differing strategic and tactical settings leading to different risk profiles in the decision making, in order to obtain some clearly defined goal. I also try to bridge the gap between non-, partly-, and fully automated decision making systems to place them all into the same framework.
