Having formed my technical roots in electrical engineering and neuroscience, I enjoy spending my professional time at that intersection. With my stint at the research bench behind me, I have spent much of my professional career building successful interdisciplinary research environments – both programs and laboratories. Motivated by creativity and driven by the challenge of identifying new technical opportunity space, I have a proven history of building successful research programs as well as creating new technical capabilities within organizations. From standup to sustained operations, I have learned time-proven skills in:• Setting strategic vision: achieving buy-in with peer “C” team members and establishing the strategic direction for research and development within an organization.• Securing and executing funding resources: securing sound funding for seedling investments and long term interdisciplinary research• Enabling a high powered workforce: identifying, resourcing and hiring high impact technical research teams• Strategy aligned metrics: data-driven assessment of performance toward strategic goals and identification of new market opportunity While at DARPA, I focused on creating new technology ecosystems through high impact breakthroughs in neurotechnology. My research portfolio explored the intersection of novel neural interfaces and third wave artificial intelligence to build human:machine interface systems applicable to broad user populations – recovery of lost function for our wounded warriors as well as able-bodied use. Listed below were some of my research programs:Hand Proprioception & Touch Interfaces for Prosthetic Limbs (HAPTIX)Neural Engineering System Design (NESD)Next-Generation Non-Surgical Neurotechnology (N3)Intelligent Neural Interfaces (INI)Bridging the Gap Plus (BG+)To decompress, I head to my woodshop or my sailboat, pick up an ocean race when opportunity knocks or set aside some impromptu time to riff with fellow musicians.Life is short…time runs fast…make a difference. Or, in laid-back regatta lingo: Look good …. have fun …. place well!
