Research Assistant
PhD dissertation research:• Identified key challenges associated with Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) as one of the major contaminants in produced water from shale gas industry (i.e., TDS up to 300,000 mg/L and evaluated the performance of existing and novel treatment methods.• Developed a prototype of a coated hydraulic fracturing proppant for the control of radium (Ra-226) in underground phases of hydraulic fracturing that would reduce Ra-226 concentration in the produced water for up to 85%.• Improved the efficiency of existing methods for Ba2+ ion removal from fracking produced water by more than 20% with minimizing the formation of radioactive sludge (i.e., 15-40% less sludge compared to the conventional treatment methods).• Improved the efficiency of existing methods for Ra-226 removal from fracking produced water by more than 15%, enabling the recovery of saleable radioactive free salts.• Collaborated with the University of South Carolina to elucidate the mechanisms of Ra-226 removal by barium sulfate solids under various experimental conditions (i.e., ionic strength 0.01-1 mol/L, solution composition, temperatures 3-40 °C). • Measurements of radium (Ra-226 and Ra-228) and other isotopes in Th-232 and U-238 decay chains using Gamma spectroscopy and Liquid Scintillation Counter; experimental support for different companies and universities (e.g., University of South Carolina).• Provided experimental (i.e., adsorption isotherms) and modelling (PHREEQC software) support for the other ongoing projects related to produced water purification.Courses and research:• Environmental impact assessment Phase I and Phase II - Critical review of “The Eagle Rule Revision”.• Conventional wastewater treatment processes and biological wastewater treatment.• Membrane distillation for wastewater treatment.
