About Alesha Ledrew
I am passionate about providing person-centered care to all individuals with cognitive, social, emotional, and physical limitations. I have a strong belief that a recreational therapist can change the attitudes of all individuals in a positive direction. I have a keen eye to bring out the potential in others and hope to have a strong influence in the field by bringing creativity and adaption to recreation and leisure to provide more meaningful participation for all. The person is NOT the issue – society is, I want to be an advocate in this field and break down the barriers that hinder so many from participation. I believe recreation therapy is unique profession and our purpose is to enrich lives, increase well-being, functional ability, happiness, quality of life and so much more! I cannot wait to become immersed in the field of RT and start my journey. Through my work experience being a SMART exercise facilitator, I have worked in retirement and LTC homes with an interdisciplinary team. I have strong work ethic, knowledge to adapt and produce meaningful programs to enhance life satisfaction and well-being of all individuals. Along with my background I hold extensive knowledge and have developed many important skills to become a recreation therapist.I am currently working towards my diploma in Recreation Therapy at Mohawk College and will graduate in September. I will be applying for my T/TRO designation after completion. I currently have a degree in Kinesiology and a minor in psychology and biology from Wilfrid Laurier university, which led me to discovering my passion to become a recreation therapist. I have valuable certifications in GPA, First AID/ CPR, SMART exercise, NCCP coaching and will be gaining many more career specific certifications that will enhance my knowledge and experience in the field of recreation therapy. By the end of my diploma, I will be equipped with many desired certifications (soon to be added). Areas of expertise include:Dementia, person-centered care, kinesiology, sensorimotor control, communication, leisure, recreation, leadership, adaptation, program development, team building, kinetics, exercise, coaching, collaboration – among many others.
